Ariel Castro, who kept women captive at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, has died after being found hanging in his cell.

Prison officials said he died in hospital late on Tuesday, after prison medical staff failed to revive him.

Castro, 53, held three women against their will for about a decade until May this year. He kept his victims chained up and raped them.

He was sentenced on 1 August to life imprisonment without parole plus 1,000 years. The house was demolished.

The former school bus driver abducted Michelle Knight, 32, Amanda Berry, 27, and Gina DeJesus, 23, from the Cleveland streets between 2002-04.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, JoEllen Smith, said: "He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals.

I heard about this early, it doesn't really surprise me. He would of been trapped in jail for the rest of his life

I knew he wouldn't last long in prison. I don't feel any pity for him.

Being from the Cleveland area (east suburbs), I heard about this from a ton of people last night and it pissed me off, mostly because I watched every single news channel the night the girls were freed, when he was on trial, read all the papers and just got extremely angry with the whole situation. I guess the immense amount of shame got to him... or that he came to realize he's a disgusting coward.

I bet he didn't kill himself.

Chances are that he did kill himself as he was in protective custody at the time which means one man to a cell.

I suspect the victims were expecting him to spend a long time in prison. It would appear that this guy has chosen to take the easy way out rather than face up to the consequences of what he did.

As said before, I know you should never wish death upon anyone, but I have no sympathy for this person, if you can call him that

He wasnt trapped nessecarily. He brought it on himself. He should have gotten the death penalty. He shouldnt have been allowed to kill himself.

He was a disgusting man, if you can even call him a man. He was going to spend his whole life in that prison anyways. I would have done the same. I would never wish that for someone, but I have no sympathy for him.

Ariel Castro was one of the most vile human beings I had ever hear of in my entire life. I'm with these two: He deserves no pity by any of us.

Well said.

Now, I don't want to say that I'm glad that he died, but I can't say I'm entirely upset. For this case I would have opted for the death penalty, or as ruled, life in prison. I actually feel sad for people who stoop to such a level that they wish to commit suicide. I don't think we should go and cheer that he is dead. What is really the difference between the life and prison and death? And don't get me wrong, I'm DEFINITELY not advocating for his acts, I am just as much against what he did as you are. But we should at least show a little respect. I mean think about it, this man killed himself with his bedsheets, that shows either A) a deep regret for his actions or B) a mental issue. Either one, I feel sorry for him. If anything, I am grateful that he is off the streets, but prison would have served that purpose.

It's kind of ironic if you think about it. He trapped 3 people in awful conditions for 10 years and raped them and aborted their babies. He also only fed them some of the crappiest food in the food business. The man that saved them? A hero. A straight up hero.

Once he got caught and put in a climate controlled cell with a bed and proper sanitation and fed real food, for some fucked up reason, he couldn't handle it. Who knows, maybe another inmate hung him, but I really don't see why they would hang him versus just slitting his throat with a razor.

Bottom line, this man was scum, and I feel no pity whatsoever for him.
