Personally, being one of those teens, my girth increased a bit later on.

They might be lying (for what reason I don't know) but if they aren't, then I guess it depends on the guy.

I agree with this. They are probably measuring in centimetres rather then inchs otherwise. The average size is 5-7". I think for many guys girth comes after growth in length. But of course everyone is different.

But answer to your question: I guess it started to grow both girth and length. It's the thickness that makes mine look so big.
