An American tourist who took $30,000 in winnings from a Melbourne poker tournament on an early morning visit to McDonald's lost it all after he was robbed at knifepoint.

Jason Potter, from Oklahoma, was attacked around 4.30am (AEDT) as he was returning to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where he was staying after his success at the hotel's Aussie Millions Poker tournament.

Mr Potter, who dropped out of university to become a professional poker player, said he woke up at 4.30am, cashed in a large quantity of poker chips in exchange for his winnings in $US100 bills and Australian notes, and went to McDonald's.

He said he was walking across Spencer Street bridge, about 50m from his hotel, when a man hit him over the head and pulled out a knife before demanding he hand over all his cash.

Detective Senior Constable Dean Trigger, of the Embona armed robbery task force, appealed to banks and financial institutions to call investigators if anyone tried to cash in large quantities of American currency.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
