This isn't my really my type of music but my friends were listening to it.
Does anyone else find some of the Blurred Lines lyrics disturbing?

Examples:

"I know you want it"
These man instinctively 'know' that the young women want him? Without them saying it? 'She wanted it' is a common defense of sexual harassers and rapists.

"Tried to domesticate you"
Um... what century is this? I thought we were moving on from domestication to seeing women as equals.

That's just my mini rant what do you think?
P.S. I'm not fully sure if this should go here so please tell me if you think I posted it in the wrong place.

there was controversy over the lyrics, with some feminist groups describing the lyrics as "rapey". then theres the whole boob-laden music video that can emphasize these criticisms. but its just a song, and the video/song was just meant to be fun sounding. not intended to stir anything up.

People need to calm down. It's a song. And the video isn't even that bad. Men go shirtless all the time and these SAME women don't bat an eyelash.

This song sort of insinuates rape. I find it offensive to women, but I also really like it because it's catchy and I little gender-role problems where I live.

I respect your views. My annoyance is that boys in my area have started singing it at girls and using it as an excuse to touch them. Also the singers have admited that it's sexist and that it was meant to be like that. Have boys been doing this where any of you live because mine can't be the only area it's happening in?

No, I'm pretty sure those guys would've been doing that regardless of the release of Blurred Lines. That's what you call a douchebag.

That's probably true but if there's all these songs and no-one saying "that's wrong" then (in their minds) it's justified.

Or they're using it as a stupid defense for their actions. You're not giving them enough credit for their (twisted) thinking process.

Okay I didn't explain myself properly, yes they're using it as a defense and getting away with it.

It's not just "a song", it's a part of the rape culture. And it's absolutely disgusting.

Yes the lyrics in this song are still the reality for a lot of women.

It's sort of worrying the amount of people that don't notice it and think it's acceptable.

Well I never really liked the song in the first place, right? But I hear it on the radio and the few lyrics I caught creep me out!
I just looked up the lyrics- eugh! I mean there's a lot of bad songs but I don't care if you're singing about sex. But this sounds more like rape to me..

Yeah sex is perfectly normal and acceptable. But that isn't and there's also the fact the men are about twice the age of the girls they're leering at - ughhh.

That age thing- so I'm not the only one who got that impression? I wasn't going to mention it because I don't think there's anything in the song(?) that talks about it, but I got the impression that this guy was old, and idk the way he said 'good girl' or whatever, like she's in her 20s.. ew ew ew.

I just wrote a really long rant right here about something that, in my head, was related to the topic, but after reading it over it really wasn't. Lol whoops.

And in the original they had the models topless but of course the men were fully clothed.
Haha I do that too sometimes what was the rant about?

A play that I auditioned for last night and a guy who's 20 is likely going to be kissing a 12 year old many times (rehearsals, all performances..)

Well, it's supposed to be 13 and 16. Or 14 and 17. But they don't have anyone else auditioning.

Oh that's a problem, but wouldn't it be illegal for a 12 and 20 year old to repeatedly kiss?

I'm not sure, but I don't think so as long as he's not touching her boob or anything like that.

So um, off topic shtuff.
The lyrics in blurred lines remind me of a 20 year old kissing a 12 year old. Ok. Yes. Umm.

Well I suppose it would because of the age difference. Really when I see the video I can't get past the fact that it's a group of old men leering at almost naked young women. *shudder*

Might as well but it's basically young almost naked models dancing around some older men who leer and sing at them.

Jesus Christ, it's just lyrics. Stop looking so deep into it and trying to find another meaning. They're already shallow enough as it is, I don't think anyone needs someone to tell them how shallow they really are.

OMG blurred lines such offensive and over the top lyrics!

U9qNeJT3Wf4

She was sixteen and innocent
I cracked her head
Ripped into her tits with a screwdriver
and tore out her lungs

I have this urge to kill
I have this urge to kill any woman

I remember I screamed
Dirty prostitutes!
Blood, blood all over her place
Bleed, bleed for me
Dirty prostitute

I have this urge to kill
I have this urge to kill any woman

I'm so tired better let me sleep
Better sleep for a thousand years
If I wake up before
Over a thousand times will I have been

I have this urge to kill

I have this urge to kill

I remember I screamed
Dirty prostitutes!
Blood, blood all over her place
Bleed, bleed for me
You dirty prostitute

I have this urge to kill

I have this urge to kill prostitutes

I have this urge to kill

I have this urge to kill women

No, it's not JUST lyrics. Well, as I said, it's a part of the rape culture and it's not okay. A lot of men listen to that and think it's normal to treat women like this. Inciting rape in a song is NOT okay. Maybe the singer doesn't really take it seriously, but there are no signs "it's second degree". Yeah it's swallow, and you understand that, that's good, but some don't. This song is fucking sexist, that's all.

At least "Urge to kill" is clear. Well I think it's as violent as Blurred Lines, but not the same violence.

Don't you have other things to worry about? It's a song. It's catchy. And most importantly it's making Robin Thicke tons of money.

Nothing else about the song actually matters except the paycheck.

Oh, a lot of things you can't imagine !
Just because it's catchy doesn't excuse the lyrics. Yeah, I maintain it's a serious thing, but I understand you don't care because you're not really a potential rape victim (as I know the percentage of men raped is very low).

And yeah, it generates tons of money, but it's not an excuse not to talk about that.

Anyway, I think I have nothing more to say about it. If you think it's okay, poor you. Yeah, you're not really concerned about women body objectification in this case.
