I don't want to sound ignorant, but why the labels? If you're attracted to men or women why should it matter? You don't see heterosexuals telling their family an friends that they're straight. I just don't see the point. If you've come to terms with that then that's brilliant

Unfortunally that happens because society is kinda dumb. For many years people thought being gay was wrong. And some people still think that being gay is wrong. So with this opression they want to fight against it. Its ok to be gay its neither right or wrong. Its your choice but since society thinks its wrong they want to prove that its fine, doing that they may push into your face, for the lack of a better expression.

Where I come from anyway, if you don't come out people will assume you're straight. I'm gradually coming out because I'm sick of people making comments about how close I am with some of my male friends and people insisting that we'd make 'the perfect couple'. Also a 'friend' has tried to set me up with guys behind my back and and it was embarrassing for me and the guys involved. Also, people will say "I prefer brunettes", or "I prefer six packs", so why not "I prefer the same gender"?

Heteros don't because it's the assumed label and cause everything is catered to them. Gays do it because they get sick of hearing shit like "When are you getting a girlfriend" or sick of gay jokes, or just to be heard about all the bigotry and discrimination that's still a problem. If no one speaks up, no progress will be made.
