What does it mean when someone has nightmares about a traumatic event that happened years ago, even if they haven't been thinking about the event. And does it mean something if the nightmares stopped for a while, but are now starting again?

I know the feeling, although my nightmare hadn't technically happened before, anyway, it's just your subconscious mind going for a wander while you're unable to stop it, more than likely just letting you know it's still there.
Are you more anxious or stressed than you normally are? Try and relax, only you could really figure out what the return of the dream means because it'll mean something personal to you, but that's only if you believe in things like that, don't read too far into it if such meanings aren't of interest to you :P

It's not me, it's my girlfriend.

It could be your girlfriend's brain trying to deal with what happened or trying to understand it better.
If they are bothering her tell her to sleep with warm clothes, it reduces the probability to have a nightmare.

She already does as far as I know. Why would they have stopped for a few months, and then start again?

Our minds take great enjoyment out of tormenting us unfortunately, traumas don't just disappear and it's incredibly likely it'll come back on her every now and again. Try getting her to talk about it or see if she wants to see someone about it, it's nothing unusual but if it's causing a problem she needs to get help for it

She doesn't like talking about it, and refuses to get help, but I'm worried because sometimes after the nightmares wake her up she's so out of it that she tries cutting just to make the memories go away. That's why I'm so concerned about this.

She needs to get help if its making her do such things, but if she won't she's going to have to at least try and talk to you about it, however unfortunately unless she wants to, she won't. Just try and make her feel safe if she won't talk about it, eventually she might open up

She's told me everything about it already, and I have no clue what to do anymore. I've tried everything. I've given her a dream catcher, I've recorded videos for her to watch before she goes to bed saying I love her. I've run out of ideas to help her. Nothing works.
