I really want to do track this spring, but I'm kind of afraid. Fitness isn't an issue. I'm confident in my ability to do well in the sport. But I'm scared that the other kids on the team won't like me and I won't fit in. From what I've seen, mostly "popular" jock kids do track, and I'm not one of those people. I'm very awkward socially. Should I join?

Depends on what you do in track and field. A lot of the "jock" kids are usually sprinters, jumpers and throwers. A lot of distance runners are not usually the popular kids. In the end any sport might have people you like or dislike. I think you should do track and field as you would enjoy it. In track and field their is no real pressure from other teammates to do well as they do not rely on you (except in relays, but not that much). Their is no reason to be afraid to join. If you are confident in your ability to compete you can apply that to the team. Do track you will love it.

I do recommend if you are not in a fall or winter sport you should train now so you will be a beast in track season.

You should go out for track. If you really want to do it, there's nothing stopping you from doing it. And yeah, you might make some friends there! After a while you'll be talking with at least one person for sure. And during the meets is usually when your team supports you, because they support everyone.

I encourage you to try track if you feel you are fit enough. It will give you confidence, and just being on a team does work wonders. I have problems with social awkwardness as well, and feeling like I doing my part in a group is so helpful to me. I hope that you will at least give it a shot, and I believe you will do well. :)

If wasn't so wrapped up in soccer, track is probably the sport I would want to do. I like running, and I am fairly good at it.

You'll never know unless you try.

Just be as nice as possible to everyone. Don't be afraid to talk to new people. A great conversation starter could be asking what grade they're in.

I don't know how attitude differs between American teenagers and British teenagers but when I joined track for sprinting I got accepted, I didn't speak a lot for a while but now I've got some good friends from it. I do sprinting in the 100 and 200m.
If you're good, then you'll get even more respect!

ive been doing track since 7th grade (im in 10th now) and ive never been great. actually ive been last in conference meets a whole bunch of times in hurdles and high jump. actually cam second to last in 100m in middle school. but i do track for the workout and for my love of running. i got under a 6 minute mile last track season (my goal), even though other guys on my team were wayy faster (like 5:10 and 5:30s). Once when doing the 4x800 i actually got the fastest leg somehow and i was with fast people... moral of the story do because you like to run, dont worry about other people. just keep workin and set goals, and work to acheive your goals

You should join if you want to. It doesnt matter if they like you or not. If you like it and wanna play do it you will be fine and im sure there will be people on the team that like you

Join up! It would give you a chance to meet new people, whether you're socially awkward or not! And even then, the popular kids shouldn't put you off doing sport!

Go for it. If you try your best at what you sign up for, the audience/team mates cheering will give you confidence/energy to do your best at it.
