The US soldier convicted of handing a trove of secret government documents to anti-secrecy website Wikileaks has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Pte First Class Bradley Manning, 25, was convicted in July of 20 charges against him, including espionage.

In a statement read by his lawyer after the sentencing, Pte Manning said he had acted "out of love for our country".

His supporters have called on President Barack Obama to pardon the soldier or commute his sentence to time served.

Bradley Manning: 'I am a woman named Chelsea'

Bradley Manning, the US soldier who leaked secret US government documents to the Wikileaks website, has announced he wants to live as a woman.

"I am Chelsea Manning," Pte First Class Manning, 25, said in a statement to NBC's Today programme. "I am a female."

He said he had felt female since childhood, wanted at once to begin hormone therapy, and wished to be addressed as Chelsea.

He has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for crimes including espionage.

He could be released on parole after at least seven years in jail, his civilian lawyer David Coombs has said.

Mr Coombs has asked President Barack Obama to pardon Pte Manning, and has pledged to appeal against the verdict and sentence.

"I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition."

But Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas, where Manning is due to serve out her sentence, said on Thursday that it would not provide trans treatment beyond psychiatric support, in a move criticised as unconstitutional by activists and LGBT groups.

Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Wednesday for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents. She was found guilty of 20 counts, six of them under the Espionage Act, but her lawyers argued during the trial that Manning was acting out of a sense of duty to her country.

"I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun (except in official mail to the confinement facility)," Manning's statement read. "I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back."

All I can do is laugh and shake my head at this story. What was or is he thinking? You break the law, caught, tried, convicted and your first order of business is "I am a woman named Chelsea". This dude is really whacked in the head and clearly needs massive help, which he won't get where he's going. Just crazy. He has the time to sort through it. I saw a pic of him trying to look like a girl and it wasn't pretty. He needs to get rid of that Rubik's Cube in his neck called an Adam's apple. I hope they can find some kind of drug or therapy. as much as he's a criminal, I don't want to see him commit suicide or just be that confused for 35 years.

He got what he deserved. You know better then to do that shit, and it wasn't like he didn't realize what he was doing, he knew it was illegal to put that on the internet, and did it anyway. And I think it was low that they drug the trans thing into it. I know several people on here that are struggling with their gender and who they are, and they wouldn't do something stupid like that.

I'm not fully sure where I stand on this. What s/he did was illegal so it must be punished.
However a lot of human rights abuses have occurred in Iraq and the world deserves to know about them. But I don't know what was leaked so maybe it was other stuff as well. It was a good media stunt to say that s/he is a woman, but there IS a record of earlier gender struggles and wanting to become a woman. Also why was such a junior person given access to sensitive info? And he was unfit for service and they still used him. I mean come on the guy/woman tried to grab a gun during counselling that doesn't exactly scream 'self controlled and fit for service'. Then again I don't know a lot about the issue. I think s/he should have been at least allowed to go to a women's prison.

EDIT: read this his pre trial and trial may be in violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights http://www.exposingthetruth.co/manning-future/#axzz2ck3apYlG

Whether they're male or female is irrelevant, looks like they've committed treason so they desearve every day of that sentence.

I haven't been following this story, I only know about it from reading an article about Chelsea Manning coming out. While I don't respect her actions, I can at least respect the identity she prefers to go by. We can criticize her for her actions; it's unfair to personally attack her for her identity, whatever she wants it to be. Everyone deserves the same respect for who they are. I will refer to her as Chelsea Manning and as a woman with feminine pronouns. It's irrelevant to me whether or not it's just a stunt for attention or genuine.

Uhh...I don't see the relevance of gender in her sentence.
No operation? Well that's too dang bad. She can wait 30 years.
You commit a crime, you suffer the consequence. I'm sure if I was male and I raped you I couldn't justify it by saying "I'm transgendered and that wasn't actually my penis deflowering you. Sowwy!"

Who knows. He may change his mind next week. It gets him some press. if he doesn't do that, we'll hear about him for his appeal, if he's ever up for parole, suicide attempt or release. He is now in ignoreland other than to equate his name with traitor and a freak of some sort. Clearly was and is mentally unstable. prison is probably the best place for him

He revealed some truths about the way America engages in war and he's punished with a prison sentence. We need more people like Bradley Manning to reveal the power abuses of country's like the USA.
