Britain has asked the EU to immediately send a team of EU monitors to Gibraltar "to collect evidence" on extra border checks at the centre of a growing row with Spain. Britain says the checks break EU free movement rules but Spain argues Gibraltar needs the checks to control smuggling. There have been lengthy traffic delays at Gibralter's border with Spain since the extra checks began. PM David Cameron spoke to EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso raising "serious concerns" that Spain's actions are "politically motivated". Spain claims sovereignty over Gibraltar, which is a British overseas territory.
