Shhh, I'm tired. :p And thanks.
Couldn't we get a like/thanks instead? They're easier to use and more fun in my opinion.

I was like +5 :( But having something like that when you can tell who's downrepped you was always gonna cause problems

This is why likes/thanks is better, there isn't a minus one if you like a post you'll like it. I've seen it on a few other forums that I use and it works really well.

I actually like the idea, as long as these 'likes' don't mass up into some form of like competition >.>

It can look something along the lines of this once you've integrated it with the forum.

And you can see how many people have liked the post and who, so it's a public thing. Similar to facebook, but it also totals up how many you get on the side as well

I honestly don't know if that would cause a problem.. after the mess rep turned into, it'd be nice if it doesn't add them up, or at least publicly add them up, but god knows how many wars it could start if people can see it, people do enough for facebook likes as it is -_-

I'm pretty sure there is a way of making it so that the total number is private.

Then I can see it working quite well as long as that part is hidden

We don't need a likes/thanks. We're not Facebook.

People were misusing mainly by using it as a way to piss each other off and "get back" at each other, something I needlessly experienced.
Since it's gone I haven't noticed any downside to not having it as a feature, and it seems to be a much more pleasant environment in the forums without it.

There's no point for it on a teen help site.

There's no point, but is there a point for a forum calender or a private diary either? No. But its an nice touch :)

It might be beneficial mostly because it's spammy to reply to someone's post to say "good job" but it's a simple way of showing the person that they contributed well and gives them a sorta thumbs up. It's a nice way to show appreciation that doesn't clog up threads. I don't see what the problem with 'likes' is. It doesn't mean we're Facebook at all. It's a positive way to say good job and it's not like rep in the sense you can leave comments (or nasty comments in the case of neg rep).
I often wish I had a way to quickly tell new members if a post of theirs was one that I found particularly helpful or nice because it's encouraging for people to see that people got something out of what they said.
Wonder.

I still fully support a "thanks" system. If anyone tries to get a bunch of likes on one post that would only show on that one post, then they're even more attention-seeking than people who craved rep.
Besides the one or two crazies that might actually do that, I don't understand how it could possibly be a complete horror.

1 or 2 "crazies"?? On this site with the amount of members that we have, there is a heck of a lot more than 1 or 2 "crazies" that would find ways to misuse that system in very similar ways to how the rep system was misused.

I don't think it would be as bad as you make it seem. What purpose would someone have for spamming likes anyway?

I'm undecided. I could see why some people would like it, but I think it'd be simpler for everyone to just quote their post and tell them "thanks" or something along with added discussion to the thread. It has the same "feel" as rep, and would cause people to get upset over people not liking their post/people liking an inappropriate post.
I think it's more trouble than it's worth.

All I can say is that with some of the weirdos that I've met on this site, they'd find a way to make it a problem!

But why should we let a small group of people ruin what could work for most of us? It's a risk I'm willing to take.

I second this. A few individuals who will take time out of their day to develop a system for themselves to get a few digital plus signs shouldn't be a concern to the majority of us.

You're right. I can't argue with you on the fact that we shouldn't let a relatively small group of troublemakers ruin our fun and appreciation for each other on the forums. The only way that we could find out if a new type of rep-like system would work would be to try it though.
A decision about implementing a completely new feature like that is obviously up to the senior staff members because they are the ones that would have to deal with any problems that could be caused by it.

I hope they at least consider the idea. We got the Uplifting section, and it's been doing fine.

Pretty sure a thanks system or something similar has been suggested before multiple times but never got implemented...
We don't need one. VT is fine without one.

It's a way of seeing if the person posting in a thread is reliable, I know that post count can also be a sign but I could post 1000 times in the music thread and then post something in the mental health section and look like I know my shit, when I don't. Why should the rest of the forum be scrutinised for a small group of people who put up a fuss over small things like rep/likes etc. If people want to get a high like count then they should contribute to the forum. Simples

A small group? I'd say more like 70% of the members on this site abused the rep system :P Most people who will say they didn't are either lying or are just completely unaware of the rules.
-------------------------------------------
It wasn't exactly a fun and happy thing that everybody loved. The majority of members left hurtful, nasty messages with no signature and would neg rep people for no reason, as well as pos repping people for no reason. Also, I personally don't want to have to go digging through 20 different users' rep histories every day to remove hate mail from other people.
VT is a help site, not somewhere to send anonymous hate to people you don't even really know. As a whole, you guys really proved that you couldn't handle that. Sorry to say, but rep is gone for the foreseeable future.

The system would be different to Rep though because there wouldn't be any negative, and I guess that only the single user could see how many Likes they got, and not anybody else.
So that way we wouldn't compete for likes.

"Too soon"
A quote that I would normally say there is no use for, but with rep, I firmly believe... "too soon"

I liked REP getting positive rep for a good post I made me feel good. obviously Neg Rep sucked especially if you didn't deserve it.
I have to agree with Mike the REP system was used and abused by many users not just a few. I still have bad memories of the REP system so, yeah Too Soon

I think the only way it would be safe is if it was just a 'thanks' button, that only the writer of the post could see how many thanks they got, other than that it's going to turn into something crazy and like Mike said, too soon...
Wonder.

Mike, I don't think you understand what you quoted. Myles was talking about a "like" system, not the rep system. Everyone agrees rep would be a terrible idea, but a like system really doesn't have any lasting significance to it.
