Apple boss Steve Jobs has unveiled the world's thinnest laptop, called the MacBook Air.

The computer, which is 0.76 inches (1.93cm) at its thickest point, was unveiled at an event in San Francisco.

The Apple head also launched online film rentals for iTunes users in the US from almost every major film studio, including Disney and Fox.

"We're dying to get this international as well," said Mr Jobs, saying it would roll-out worldwide later in the year.

Of the laptop, Mr Jobs said: "It's an amazing feat of engineering."

It does not have a CD or DVD drive in order to save space. "It was built to be a wireless machine," he added.

The laptop will compete with a range of portable devices, from companies such as Sony, Dell and Asus, which are already building so-called sub-notebooks, designed to be lighter and more mobile.

The machine goes on sale in two weeks and costs from $1,799 in the US (£1,199 in the UK) and comes with either an 80 Gigabyte hard disc drive as standard or 64 Gigabyte solid state drive for an added $999.

Well what do you think of it do you think its worth the risk of it breaking easily or the fact it costs so much and has no disc drives.

discuss/debate :)

I wouldnt buy it
I didnt even pay much attention to it after I saw the display size

I do however
think its a brilliant and huge step forward
my laptop
weights a TON
and is really big n clunky

It would be great if I worked at some huge company instead of carrying around a huge briefcase just a thin light laptop with 5hr battery life

why does it cost more to have less memory?

why does it cost more to have less memory?
it weighs less and is thinner I think

but yeh its a great step forward but it needs to be developed a bit more before people should buy it.

why does it cost more to have less memory?

Because the smaller drive is solid state meaning it has no moving parts making it more protected. And I say yes, I might get it because of this deal I made with my parents.

And its called MacBook Air. :)

yeah I suppose but u couldnt really use it as a replacement computer I mean you can link it up to a windows/mac computer and use the disc drive on that or pay £75 on buying the specially designed one that there selling.

Its a major breakthrough just theres still needs to be some issues looked into on it.

I want it. I mean if you think its gunna break then be careful with it. If your a rough person then its obviously not a good idea to get something that thin. I also think its a breakthrough but i would wait to get it so they can work out the glitches. :] Bu thats just me.

It's pretty, it's tiny, it's a Mac, but I don't think I'd buy it.. I'd probably break it (because its so small) and I'd be afraid of wrecking something so expensive.. plus the lack of a CD/DVD ROM is a huge turn-off.

Well it's designed to be completely portable for people using them in businesses, so less memory and lack od a CD/DVD drive doesn't really affect them too much.

It sounds a little flimsy to me, it may break real easy.
