Hi guys,

Me and my girlfriend have been in a (rather long distance) relationship for around half a year now. We both live in the United States (Texas -> Pennsylvania) but live about 1,000 miles apart (5 hour flight/22 hour drive). I'm trying to go visit her for about a week however there's some issues I've ran into...

My first option was to purchase a vehicle (finance). I have about $1.5-2K at the moment to spend. Getting a vehicle is no problem, new Camry is like $220/m. The issue is the insurance.. which would cost about $1K upfront then $1K the next 6 months. I can't do that.

My second option was to fly there. Which is the only option really now. The issue is, I'm 19 -- most car rental companies only do rental deals with people 20-21 years of age or older. I haven't found a car rental company that will let me rent a car. If I fly, I'd need to drive about an hour and a half to actually get to the place I need to be. I can't get a taxi, bus, etc.

Any suggestions? I only have about two weeks to do this since her mom is out of work for vacation, so she has free time to spend. It's really a bummer there's so many problems being only 19, not being able to freely travel due to restrictions.. If you've been in a long distance relationship, you should know actually visiting and seeing that person face to face is the real thing that makes you say "this is real", or basically showing that you're actually going through with your relationship despite the distance being hard; which is why I'm trying to travel thus far.

Flying is your best option at this point. Unless you liek trains.

If you're going to somewhere within an hour of Philly, then you can easily get a couple of Septa buses as close to where you wanna get as possible, and then get a cab from there.

You can also find a rental place closer to your destination that may be able to help if you need a car for the rest of the week+.

That's only for Philly though. Anywhere else I can't help you with. :(

I've actually found out that in NY and MI you can rent cars at 19.. So.. Alas, my solution. Fly to New York, get rental car near state border then go to PA. W00T!

Just an update, got the flight and car booked. Might post some pictures when I'm back ^^

I know how you feel, I've been in 2 long distance relationships (and 0 real life ones) and my girlfriend who lives in America (I'm in the UK) recently broke up with me, which hurt of course. We planned to see each other when she comes to England for university study in a couple of years... I'm done with long distance now, someone always gets hurt. But when a realistic opportunity does come to finally meet them, I'd definitely do it. Spending thousands of $ to see a person would be just amazing.
