A driver who accidentally put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake smashed into a petrol bowser, sparking a blaze that gutted a central Queensland petrol station.
Staff at the United Fuels service station on the Bruce Highway at Miriam Vale were forced to flee as the blaze took hold about 5pm (AEDT) yesterday.
"I tried to put it out, but I couldn't," a trembling staff member told National Nine News last night.
"I said to [my colleague] 'Run, get out. We're going to blow up …'. I said 'we have to get out!'"
The blackened shell of a building was all that remained of the petrol station this morning, television images showed.
A 38-year-old passenger suffered leg injuries and was flown to Rockhampton Base Hospital.
A four-year-old boy who was in the back seat of the car escaped unhurt. The 41-year-old driver was also unharmed.
