View Full Version : Not allowed to buy condoms

So today I went to a local grocery store intending on buying condoms. I picked up a mini pack of Trojans (3 in box) and went up to the checkout. When I handed them to the guy he eyed me up like he couldn't believe I was trying to buy these and finally said "I.D. please", and I was like "what?". He said "you've got to be 18 to buy condoms". I said "really? why?" and he was like "because you have to be". I said that I'm not 18 and he told me that if I wanted them that my parents needed to give him permission for me to buy them.
Long story short, I walked out with no condoms and embarrassed as hell, but also extremely confused! In 8th grade sex-ed we were told that in our area it is illegal for stores to not sell condoms to anyone of any age, so how the hell can this store do this??

I just read some things and I think he told you no because it's against his own personal morals.
Damn, that sucks. You'd think they'd encourage such a thing.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. The guy wasn't cool at all! I've bought condoms at other grocery stores before with absolutely no problem, so either it's store policy or this guy is just a dick.

Exactly. But maybe they don't want him to have sex in general...

Just go to the same store and check out with a different cashier.

That's absurd, it's sad to notice that our society still tries to stop teenagers having sex just because they think it's wrong. They should accept it and encourage younger people to buy condoms, to prevent STDs and teenage unwanted pregnancy...

I'd have picked up another pack and went to a different cashier. After checking out, go to the manager and inform them of the issue. Easy as that.

I would either wait for someone else to work so you can pay them for it or ask to see a manager or something. They shouldn't be able to deprive you of protection it just doesn't seem very responsible of them.

Teens have sex. People need to accept it, these aren't the 50's.

He was just jealous that you were going to have sex and he wasn't.
But seriously there is no age requirement for condoms in the US that I know of. The only items regulated/age-restricted is alcohol, tobacco, certain OTC medicine, and anything that can cause harm or destruction like weapons. Condoms don't fall into that category last I checked. If the guy had a personal belief against sex or whatever, then he should have sent you to another cashier or gotten someone else.
If you have an older friend, have him pretend to be your brother or something and have him complain to the manager if you remember the guys name. A store might take someone a little older more seriously. Or just go somewhere else or avoid the guy. Good luck.

And I was told in health class that it was illegal for stores to do what this one just did, not sell condoms to anybody of any age condoms.

I would have reported him. I mean he should assume that you're going to have sex no matter what. You buying condoms was just a plus.

While some teens would choose to abstain from sex if unable to use a condom many would go ahead and risk pregnancy or STIs. How stupid does someone have to be, whether the store clerk acting on his own initiative, the company director setting policy or any manager in between to suppose age restricting condoms will help anything unless, of course, he has shares in an abortion clinic.
Depending on how much you feel like challenging this stupidity you could demand to see the manager and if you're confident on the failure to sell being illegal age discrimination demand full name etc. to pass onto the police.
It is probably easier to just buy them from a different store, though.

I'm sorry, I think you might have mis understood me. I am against the clerk like everyone else. When I said "report him," I meant report the clerk, not the kid doing the right thing.
Another way to get condoms is us e the vending machine in the bathroom of most gas stations.

If I were him, the clerk, I would not have sold them to a young boy or girl myself, but given that it is a store and that it stops STDS to have condoms I'd probably sell them. No reason to belittle the clerk though.

Well he can get in big trouble for not selling them. Under aged sex might be against his morals, STD's and Teenage pregnancy isn't. Lol.

I don't think "store policy" is a valid excuse; I'm pretty sure all stores have to sell condoms to people of all ages. Maybe he was just misinformed of the law. Depending how local the store is to you, it might be worth reporting, so the manager knows to go over with his/her employees that condoms are required to be sold to any aged person.

I would definitely call management or something, they can't deny anyone of any age to buy condoms. That's like saying that we don't need to wear a condom during sex or anything. It's like saying there isn't such a thing as teen pregnancy or STDs.

I understand that, and I understand where they are coming from, but they need to stop living in the 1950's and start living in 2013 when it is accepted that teenagers do and will have sex and promoted that they do it in a safe manner for all parties involved.

You can't force everyone and those 50's values are still alive today. 2013 is no reason to throw out all of the old even though some of the old should be thrown out. At least you understand. I am the same way, I understand teens do it, (I didn't), but I don't like it, I never say anything if I hear it or someone tells me they do it though...

that happend to me once, but i was like like laddy i am going to do it with or without them, it is your choice, i know its not illegal to buy them when under 18 its actually illegal not to sell them to those who want it. Now i will have sex with or without condoms, we are both consenting and want to prevent any risk. Which is why i came to buy these, now are you going to help me prevent teen pregnancy and std's or are you going to be a dried up jelous prune cus you cant get none of this...yes i made a scene and 2 cash regesters looked over at me too but i dont care, let the world know i get some.

September 12th, 2013, 06:46 PM
That's stupid as hell. There is no law (that I know of) stating that you must e 18 years of age to purchase condoms. Here's what you can do. If you go to that same store again, try and go to an isle where that guy isn't, because it seems like it's his own personal beliefs that's stopping him from selling them too you. So, maybe someone else in the store will let you purchase them. If that doesn't work, just go to a different store.

Many stores now a-days have an "In Store Policy" which can vary by shop, company, state, country etc.
Asda in the United Kingdom (or wal-mart to you Americans) have an in store policy where you can buy condoms until you're 16. Tesco have a similar policy and many other shops have these same policies.
My advice is to go shop to shop and find someone who will sell you them. I did read above it's good that you got sold them so good on you :D

They shouldn't have done that to you, but easy problem to solve. Just go to another store or a clinic (they're free there).

I would have asked for the manager right then while I was still there with the dickhead clerk. that's bullshit. and if the manager said the same thing, while they were both there I'd take out my phone and ask for the number of the district office or whatever it's called. that's fucked up

The moment he said no, you should have said that since they were used on dicks and he was obviously being one, that he should just hold on to them. He needs them more than you do, for different reasons. LOL

That's not true. You do not have to be a certain age to buy them. Tell him to get over himself, have him check you out, and afterwards, ask to see the manager and report his ass...
