Back when I first joined we had a reputation system, I just want to know why it's gone :)

Too many people were abusing it, and everyone was complaining about it all the time.

It was abused a lot and a lot of people bitched about it. So mike got rid of it.

I'd say Ronnie got rid of it, but yeah, it was abused by almost every member and it caused nothing but fights, drama and headaches. It's been a much nicer environment since it's been gone, or at least I think so.

I would back up that.

People were misusing mainly by using it as a way to piss each other off and "get back" at each other, something I needlessly experienced.
Since it's gone I haven't noticed any downside to not having it as a feature, and as Mike and David said, it seems to be a much more pleasant environment in the forums without it.

It got to the point that people had outrageous amount of rep points and power from only a few posts because the people giving the rep had so much. The entire purpose of the rep system is to indicate to new members who the more competent advice givers were. For a long time it's been a popularity contest. I miss it in a way, only in the last few days i've wanted to give rep to some great advice posts i've seen and its been like wait, i can't now. But I think the right decision was made, probably 3 years overdue, and overall life is better without it.

The rep system was horribly abused by a lot of members and a group even start "Rep Farming" where they'd agree to rep each other quite often. Therefore making a mockery of the entire system.
Some members even went as far to remove content out of their posts when they got a neg rep to prevent them from getting more negative reps. It's also very crippling for new members when a high rep person gives them neg rep, it can take them a long time to recover.
Overall the system needed to be removed.
There have been a few suggestion to introduce a kudos system or like/dislike system where it doesn't actually count anything (e.g. nobody can tell how many likes/dislikes you've had) but I think it is too soon to introduce another form of rep to this site.
