Every year the high season surprises the car drivers with longer and longer waiting times and long tailbacks of traffic on several locations in Slovenia. The Karavanke tunnel on the border between Slovenia and Austria is just one of those locations. But at least here things are about to change.
On Wednesday, the 7th of August, in Jesenice a plan for the construction of the second tube of the Karavanke tunnel was introduced. A plan, which was discussed between Slovenia and Austria for a long time now, but with a positive result in the end. In the last year an Austrian-Slovenian interstate commission has decided, that a second tunnel tube will be built. Also an additional part of the motorway will have to be constructed as well, of an overall length of almost 3,5 km. The value of the investment is estimated at 250 million EUR. Slovenia´s share will be 120 million EUR. According to the ministry for Infrastructure the decision is final. Despite of some obstacles, one of them is the water source Julijana, the second tunnel tube should be operational in 2019.
