"People with ADHD don’t really have a deficit of attention. I’m fairly sure this isn’t an original thought because it’s so obvious, but it seems more and more that ADD/ADHD should be called “attention dysregulation disorder.”
The problem isn’t not being able to focus. A person with ADHD might be able to spend hours reading, playing video games, or chatting to several people online. The challenge? Being able to focus in situations that aren’t enjoyable or high stimulus. An emergency room surgeon with ADHD might seem extremely capable of focusing as she extracts a bullet from a kid. A business executive with ADHD might seem incredibly savvy when he orders the company to change to a new technology. And an artist might seem to have great focus when she spends several days straight working on a new piece – while ignoring the bills piling up in the mail."
