One month before the start of the European Basketball Championships, to be hosted by Slovenia on 4–22 September 2013, the Slovenian basketball team remains undefeated in its warm-up games. With victories over Latvia, Serbia and Turkey, it convincingly won first place at the Laško Group Tournament held at the Zlatorog Hall in Celje last weekend. Before that, the Slovenian team had also defeated Ukraine in Domžale and Macedonia in Litija.
At the tournament, the Slovenian team outscored Latvia 71:67, Serbia 67:52 and Turkey 72:53.
The Communication Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, in its role as an administrator of the “I Feel Slovenia” brand, took the opportunity of the tournament to carry out its first campaign of providing fans with paraphernalia for supporting our basketball heroes. The fan campaign promoter is Esad Babačić, a poet, writer, journalist and basketball enthusiast. He and Lipko, the EuroBasket 2013 mascot, played and lost a game of shooting hoops against the captain of the Celje Pivovarna Laško handball team, Luka Žvižej. The handball team had gladly surrendered their Zlatorog Hall to the basketball stars.
For the EuroBasket 2013 organisers, the tournament at the Zlatorog was a dress rehearsal for the European Championships, during which the hall will host Group C, which, apart from Slovenia, includes Spain, Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland and Georgia.
The Slovenian team will continue its preparations in Kranjska Gora, while next weekend it faces two new challenges at a tournament in Belgrade.
