People who play video games are less able to control impulsive aggressive behaviour, a new study suggests.

Researchers found video games boost visual attention, but reduce impulse control.
A person playing a first-person shooter video game, such as Halo or Unreal Tournament, must make decisions quickly. Researchers found that the fast-paced decision-making boosts the player's visual skills but comes at a cost, reducing their ability to inhibit impulsive behaviour.
The reduction in what is called "proactive executive control" appears to be yet another way that violent video games can increase aggressive behaviour, according to the researchers.
Doctor Craig Anderson, director of the Centre for the Study of Violence at Iowa State University in the United States, said: "We believe that any game that requires the same type of rapid responding as in most first-person shooters may produce similar effects on proactive executive control, regardless of violent content.

Lol this is total bullshit. Until they do a survey which includes a higher number of players and doesn't limit the testing to one genre of game, I won't believe any of this.

This is mostly true from my perspective. My brother is impulsively aggressive and plays too much videogames. I play occasionally, but I stay calm throughout.

it just depends on the game. and your internet connection and speed

I don't know if this is true or not. sounds like bull shit to me. I'm not much of a gamer so I haven't noticed any difference in me.

Oh god, this just makes me laugh. I'm a gamer and I'm one of the least aggressive people you will ever meet. This is a load of crap. Once again, people are looking for an excuse to blame video games for violence or something of the sort.

If you raise your kids right, and make sure they understand the difference between real and unreal, this is not a problem. It's the person, not the damn games.

This. I know people who play the absolute bloodiest and most grueling games on the planet on a regular basis who don't have a violent bone in their body.

I play FPS games. Do I run into my school with a gun to people's heads? No. One of the dumbest stereotypes yet.

I can see the logic in that actually

There is no logic behind it. The only "logic" that is applied is, "Hey, you play violent video games. That must make you a violent person!"

There is no true correlation between committing acts of violence and playing video games. People just want to blame things that seem violent as a way of justifying their own preconceived notions.

I'm a gamer myself, at the moment I'm killing civilians on GTA 4, I don't agree particularly in the aggressiveness part but I can see how it could make you impulsive

Not true at all. Other factors come in.

There is some truth behind it, but videogames do not make non-violent people violent, only already violent people violent. Also, violent people are more likely to play videogames. This study has less to do with the content of the videogame, but more with the way the game plays. The way you must quickly make choices and act without thinking can exaggerate ADD like symptoms in real life, if games are played continuously for long periods.

Before I start anything Ill just say Im a fanatic of games, i play everything from Assassins Creed to Mass Effect to COD's and Halo.

Personally i have a very high level of self control but I can 100% see were this study is coming from. Think about it when your a teenager everything you do is affecting you personality, think about how you adopt the mannerisms of your family members. The more a person exposes themselves to something as a developing youth the more they adopt traits of that thing. For example violence in games, or making decisions without thinking (instincts in COD).

I could even argue that games like COD and Halo would decrease your impulse control and increase your reaction time, and that games like Mass Effect and Skyrim would increase your impulse control because of how different the gameplay is. RPG's require careful gaming to ensure you don't ruin a story line your building or a quest your on.

Thats just my two cents, the study isn't ridiculous or too far fetched. But I do agree they shouldn't paint all gamers with the same brush.

Well, I could see how this would be true for somebody who gets pissed off at video games. :P

Some people play video games to escape from their lives when something bad is happening to them, which could be the cause of the aggressive behaviour... It's completely untrue that video games are the cause though

That's total bullshit! Any regular person would know not to do actions from video games irl. The only people who go out and play Real World GTA are mentally unstable to begin with.

I play video games all the time however I've been impulsive my entire life, they need to check certain things about the test subjects before doing the tests. as well as letting them play different genre of video games.

As a gamer myself, this is absolute bulllshit. Sure, I get mad occasionally while playing video games, but who wouldn't be mad at the little 10 year old camping in the corner screaming over the mic... Little son of a bitch...
