Either Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (http://www.caltrain.com) (JPBX), Bay Area Rapid Transit (http://www.bart.gov) (BART), Amtrak (http://www.amtrak.com/home) (AMTK), or Union Pacific (http://www.up.com)(UP).

Well I only have Deutsche Bahn as favorit, because they are the only one in Germany for more than regional train traffic. If I could choose any worldwide, than the Japanese. They don't have delay or just a small amount

All of Amtrak sucks. And that's really the only option. Have you tasted there food?

That's what you get when you have the government fund the travel companies.

Yup, because having 50 year old train equipment is *clearly* the governments fault.

They're the one that keep choosing to give taxpayers money to a company that provides an inferior service.

We should allow for more competition. It'd force Amtrak to either provide a better service, otherwise they'd go bankrupt.

Meh. Amtrak operates a large fleet. It takes a long time to design and build new rolling stock. For example BART started the task of replacing only merely 1,000 train cars and it's been ongoing from 2009 and expected to complete in the mid-late decade. Amtrak's (abeit slowly) replacing their equipment which in turn, makes for more reliable (less breakdowns), quieter, faster, and better food :P

It really isn't a staff problem that the coach seats are crappy or that people can't stop complaining for 10 seconds, it's the fact that some of the equipment was purchased in the 60's and is in need of a rehab.

So what? Either way my parents tax money shouldn't be paying for it; they're a private company. That should come either out of fairs or the executives pockets.

I guess it's each to their own on what's good train service and what's not. Personally I haven't had any problems with Amtrak's crew (I can't say much about their equipment though since I've never actually ridden an Amtrak branded train). The government supports it because it made for a much needed streamline of the intercity passenger rail system. Unlike Air travel or stagecoach buses such as greyhound, If we had multiple railroad companies like Union Pacific and BNSF providing passenger service, it would eliminate the initial purpose of creating Amtrak and create unnecessary railroad agreements, and in the long run, make it harder for someone to travel long distance by train (if they were trying to go to NYC from LA they'd have to buy one ticket for the UP Southwest Chief, then a SEPARATE ticket for the Lake Shore Limited, odd connections, etc).

Maybe it shouldn't be funded completely by tax payers, but the money that Amtrak's putting in it's pockets are certainly improving amtrak for the future.

I'm from the UK so I have too many to choose from, and they're all rip offs anyway. Our system should be nationalised back to British Rail, but if I HAD to choose one it would be East Coast as it's the only one under public ownership!
