View Full Version : Thirst.

People are funny.
I work at a Little Caesars inside a store and I frequently get a customer that's comes up to the counter and says, "I am so thirsty! can I get a small/medium/large soda?"
Usually if someone is that thirsty they are dehydrated and need good ole H2O to replenish and rehydrate.
When did society become so addicted to soda that when a person is dehydrated he/she feels compelled to quench that thirst with a giant cup of caffeine, syrup, and sugar?
I always want to tell my customers, "if you're that thirsty I would recommend some water." But then I'd get fired. So I don't.
I just don't understand the addiction to soda. I see no benefits that come with drinking it. Don't get me wrong, I'll occasionally get the craving for a nice cold coke but the amount of people that say they "hate" water just amazes me.
In a world where close to a billion people don't even have access to clean drinking water we shouldn't take our access for granted.
Those sugary drinks might taste good but that's all they are, sugar.
Ahhh. End rant.
Drink your water. (;
Do you know why people seem to drink less water?
P.S. I have no idea where I should post this so...yep.

It's a guilty pleasure and the fact that it's so readily available makes people choose it over water. It ain't pretty, but it is how it is.

It tastes good. And why would you go out in public to buy water?

Water is free at all fast food places and restaurants. It's the bottled water that costs money.
I never once said it was the end of the world. I just find it quite ironic that people drink soda to quench their thirst when instead it just makes them thirstier and thirstier.
People can drink all the soda they want, but just because water is so accessible to us doesn't make it okay for people to waste so much of it.
Besides, the people that claim to hate water are just idiots. Yes we all have our preferences and perhaps someone prefers to drink soda instead of water but to claim to completely hate water? That's like me saying I hate oxygen.
The main point of my post was to point out how a large part of society believes soda to actually be a legitimate substitute for water. Or the large part of society that is literally addicted to soda. It's like being addicted to a drug. We all know how unhealthy that is. How illegal that is. But, "it's just soda."
Cocaine is just cocaine. Unhealthy and harmful to the body but it sure is fun to snort.

Well the first reason is that it is much more refreshening than water. And secondly, water is so expensive at such places compared to soda.

It often depends on where you live. In some places in the US, the tap water is virtually undrinkable, and it's often not transparent. Where I live, the water comes from snowmelt, so I have no problem drinking it, but I can see why people in other parts of the country would want to drink anything but water to quench their thirst. Also, soda tastes good.

Well actually, it's not free at all places. You're incorrect there. I've actually never worked anywhere where we offered free water to someone who was thirsty. In fact, we were encouraged to sell them the most expensive product at hand whatever it may be.
Secondly you're comparing a beverage to a hardcore drug. Yes, they might both be harmful but comparing the two is extreme and ridiculous at best.
Lastly, not everyone prefers soda. I prefer water or at least a sports drink despite their high sodium quantities.
All that really matters is that you're taking care of your own body. You shouldn't concern yourself with the health of random customers- your pizza is likely far more harmful than the soda anyway. Would you suggest they go purchase food elsewhere? No, because then you'd be out of work.

What restaurant have you worked at that didn't offer water for free? Can't say I believe you on that one.

Am I the only one that opened this with a different kind of thirst in mind?

Some people just have the preferences. I personally don't mind water, I'd just rather drink a sports drink instead. If they choose to drink/eat unhealthy items, let them deal with the consequences.

It's likely a regional thing. Water in this area isn't free, though it is cheaper than anything else.

I don't know if this is actually legitimate, but from personal experience I've found that water is only good for long-term hydration - drinking your 2 liters a day. But if I'm thirsty right at that moment I find minerals etc. (that you find in soda) to be much more effective.
Besides, the people that claim to hate water are just idiots. Yes we all have our preferences and perhaps someone prefers to drink soda instead of water but to claim to completely hate water? That's like me saying I hate oxygen.
I don't really like water. I don't hate it but I'd prefer to drink pretty much anything else.
Besides, water does has a taste - it may be fairly mild but it's well within someone's perfect right to dislike it.

Let me get one thing straight for everyone:
Never did I say that people that drink pop are bad or stupid people. I even said that I'll occasionally have some but that's only because I get such strong cravings for it. I understand that this may be the case for other people. I understand that others may like pop more than water, I get it, they like the flavor better. The thing is, whether or not you like pop more than water...well that doesn't mean you outright hate water. I HATE peas. So I don't eat them. Well if someone truly hated water as much as they claim to they wouldn't drink it, and they would die. The thing that I'm pointing out the most is how addicted society is to soda. Hell, even sometimes I feel like I'm addicted to it when I get strong cravings.
I also don't see how my comparing of soda to cocaine as very "ridiculous."
Yes, one is a drug and is illegal but in the scheme of things they contribute hardly anything that's good for the body.
Cocaine: gets you energized. Mgives you an intense high. Leaves you feeling good.
Soda: the caffeine energizes you, gives you a sugar rush. Leaves you feeling *somewhat* hyper.
Cocaine: harmful to the body. Can cause many diseases and health problems.
Soda: harmful to the body. Can cause rotting teeth, cavities, high cholesterol and helps lower the levels of HDL in the body. (Good Cholesterol). Not to mention the sugar and fructose corn syrup are pretty much power boosts to help in developing diabetes and crap.
Drinking soda doesn't make you bad. Or an idiot. Or whatever. It just seems ironic to me to try and "quench thirst" by drinking something so dehydrating.
And I agree that it seems weird that a water or fast food place charges for water. I have only seen them charge for bottled water, but for a cup? Never.
Besides, I'm a cheap ass. There's no way I'm paying $3-5 for a freaking soda at a restaurant. Hell, even $1 seems expensive when I can get the better tasting water for FREE. That's just my opinion. We all have our own opinions but nevertheless I feel we should all agree on the fact that people shouldn't waste as much water as they do. I know that's a random point but y'know, conserve and stuff.
