Both very good the difference is Canon gives you better quality for a lower price. To get the same quality from a Nikon requires going to the next higher price range.
Canon is also better for video Nikon is more for still images.

I wouldn't say that canon offers better image quality for a lower price. The price range is the same but are some unnoticeable differences between the two.

I've always used Canon and some old Konica Minolta camera, and I've been satisfied. I wouldn't mind a Nikon for still shots, but I'm not really used to the layout.

My dad's a Nikon dude, and he'd never, ever let me get away with buying a Canon. So, I guess that makes me a Nikon. I like the Nikon's we have around the house anyways. :P

I've used both, in terms of photo quality (DSLRs), they are pretty much on par with each other. But I find Canon a bit easier to use.
In terms of Point and Shoots though, Canon is BY FAR better. I've used a Canon Powershot (I own one lol) and a Nikon Point and Shoot and the Canon is by far better.

I use and own Pentax DSLRs because they fit my needs and do what I need them to do. I don't have a ton of experience with Canon or Nikon so I can't really compare the two companies upright, we'd need to compare a specific camera; like Canon 6D and Nikon D600. Looking at those two, I would definitely go with the Nikon. Canon DSLRs have crappy build quality (especially the lower/mid end DSLRs), Nikon's build quality is a little better and the ergonomics and button placements are better (and for me, that's a good selling point). Canon I'm just not a fan of.
Both brands, however, do make satisfactory cameras and lenses, that are capable of taking great photos (in the right hands, of course) just comes down to the buyer's preferences, I guess.

Sums up my experiences
I grew up in a Canon household, and own a ton of Canon products, Printer, lenses, etc. Magic Lantern is awesome on Canon, not to mention they have a much larger ecosystem, licensing lenses to Black Magic, etc etc.
I've played a lot with both and like both equally though.

My previous camera was a lower-end Canon dslr and was replaced with a semi-professional Nikon dslr. I chose a slightly older Nikon system mainly because it was the best value at the time. I noticed more consistent files with the Nikon with better dynamic range and better image refinement than the Canon. However, I do slightly miss my Canon's video capabilities.
I personally recommend using a camera that is suited to your needs than any particular brand or camera manufacturer. Using what you enjoy and experimenting with brands makes photography much more enjoyable than insisting on using a single brand, in my opinion. Good luck Canon, Nikon, and all photography users alike. ;)

Canon does make more lens than nikon, but the aps-c sized sensor on a nikon is bigger than a canon

Personally, I like Nikon. My field in photography is generally nature so I use Nikon because it is good for outdoor shots.
Anyways, whatever you feel is better. What do you think? :yeah:

Well I've used Olympus, Canon, and Nikon (I own a nikon, now)
And there isn't much of a difference, in terms of the actual image quality.
I liked the Nikon and the Canon versus the Olympus because their layout was better.
Though I really do love my nikon and I have been using it to take shots that I am really proud of.
The noise performance of both is really good, for APS-C sized sensors
I just really wish that they wouldn't put ridiculously High ISOs on the cameras, especially since the amount of noise will ruin it.
On my DSLR I can get to 6400 with still usable shots, but if I use Hi-1(12800) the amount of grain and noise is just so no. I don't really see reason to putting an ISO that high if it's not going to produce images that are clean. I don't know, it's just a little pet peeve of mine.
But as of now, I do prefer Nikon because it's pretty easy to use, and it offers a guide mode to those who are new to photography, and it goes in pretty deep with different techniques, and I find that handy. But I don't remember there being that on canon, not that its actually needed, but I think it's a cool addon.
While for canon, sometimes I felt the processing engine would make the pictures a bit too dull? For my taste, at least. But I did love the excellent video quality of canon. One thing I won't miss, is the noisey autofocus of the kit lens. My nikon is near silent, just a bit of a squeaky type noise, but it's not bad at all.
And I won't miss having a Flash go off when I need to focus in the dark. It's irritating and uses up more battery, whilst my nikon(and most others, I think) have this tiny bulb that gives off light to illuminate the subject for focusing and it's not quite as bad as the flash.
And the focusing for the brands is about the same, nothing to squabble about.
All in all, I'll recommend Nikon since I am a Nikon user, but I'll emphasis they also need to pick a camera they also feel will be easy to use for them.

you should be able to get rid of color noise in post prossesing

I know how to do that already, but thank your for showing me that video ^^
I tend to not do it though, because removing noise softens the image a bit, and I really like crisp and sharp images.

being a semi-professional photographer, I would have to go with Nikon products. yes, the prices are up there, but when you want quality, that's just somethingyou have to live with.
I have two Nikon cameras and (at the current time) two lenses. One of those a lens I use for portraits and posed photography, the other a telephoto which I use for sports like tennis, football, soccer, baseball, etc. I love Nikon

It all depends on your preference on the set up and your priorities. The similar models between Canon and Nikon have ups and downs. Some have more features but let down on the image quality. It depends on what you buy on image quality or features. Now don't always sacrifice a lot if features for a lot more features but if there is a large difference on image quality I would choose that but you need to make you own decision. I can recommend Canon because that is what I use and some good models are the 600D and the 60D. And remember to always invest in your lenses. They determine your image quality more than your camera most of the time.

They both have their good attributes and their bad ones.
Canon: good low light and sport, bad lens range
Nikon: good for portraiture and landscape, good function ability and lens range, not so good low light and sport (at least in cheaper models because the nikon d4s is way better then any canon)

I had a Canon Powershot A-30? I think the name was. I loved that camera, despite being digital. I now have a shiny new Nikon Coolpix (Forget that model, too). The old A-30 was a tank compared to the Nikon. (It's been run over by a mower at idly, dropped numerous times.. into a pond... ehh, it's been a rough life). I will admit that Nikon has truly gotten cheap now.. (Coming from the owner of a Nikon F series).. However, I like my 60's era Cannon SLR just fine. Old Nikon's make a nice picture... when their mercury powered meter works.

what do you mean by bad lens range?
Nikon lenses (in Australia at least) go from low end entrance level lenses and then jump straight up to high end professional lenses like the Nikon trinity. There lacks the in between range where as canon is so much more diverse. They cover everything. I just feel Nikon are either all professional or all beginner with very limited options in between. I'm switching across to canon soon mainly for that reason

They're both very good companies that produce amazing cameras. Canon had more users in the 70s for their marketing & advertising was far superior. I like the "look" of Canon, especially on lower-end DSLRs, for they seem more professional - the Nikons offer far more guidance and are easier to use by noobs, whereas Canons are more straightforward, with faster access to all the settings and less instructions. (Again, here, I'm comparing the 1100D & D3100).

I'm still using my family's Canons so I haven't really had any experience with other brands. We have two PowerShots - one is a point and shoot SD850 IS and the other one is more of an digital SLR S2 IS, although to my knowledge the lenses can't be exchanged so perhaps it is a bigger point-and-shoot??
