Well, i've only used Toshiba and Acer, and they're both alright, and pretty inexpensive, as they're usually in the 300-600$ range.
So yeah, basically they're just reliable and inexpensive. :P

Here's what I posted in another thread, which may not apply to you necessarily because your budget is bigger.
First off, I'd recommend making a list of must-haves, wants, don't cares, don't wants, and must-nots so you can cross off certain aspects of a computer. For example, you said no desktops, so that would go in a must-not category. There are tons of different features that are offered that you might not want or care about, so you don't want to pay extra for a touch screen when you don't plan on ever using it. You should definitely take a look at this buying guide for more tips into your laptop research.

Ultimately, you're the one that's going to pay for it, so you should do your best in doing research so you can get the best product that suits your needs. I'll give some of my suggestions based on specs and/or experience.
Cheaper models:
1. Lenovo IdeaPad (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-+IdeaPad+15.6%22+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/8814652.p?id=1218902554441&skuId=8814652&ci_src=5784816&ci_sku=8814652&ref=25&loc=PGR)- $269
2. Dell Inspiron 15 (http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-3521/pd?&~ck=mn)- $350
3. Asus X501A (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CVXJ6XG/ref=asc_df_B00CVXJ6XG2627978?smid=A3I8SIV4ZMJMWX&tag=dealtmp646700-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395129&creativeASIN=B00CVXJ6XG)- $355
Higher-priced models:
1. HP Pavilion 15 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/D1H18AV?HP-Pavilion-15z-e000-Notebook-PC)- $429
2. HP Pavilion 17 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/D1H55AV?HP-Pavilion-17z-e000-Notebook-PC)- $449 (bigger screen)
3. Asus VivoBook X202E (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009F1I1C4/ref=asc_df_B009F1I1C42628931?smid=AU9VSXF54U7QB&tag=cnet-pc-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395129&creativeASIN=B009F1I1C4)- $459 *touchscreen* Review here (http://www.cnet.com/laptops/asus-vivobook-x202e-dh31t/4505-3121_7-35530760.html). Found it here for $449 in pink (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B7JQQQA/ref=asc_df_B00B7JQQQA2570289?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pgtvs-463-23-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395097&creativeASIN=B00B7JQQQA)
4. Lenovo G500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312820)- $479
5. Sony VAIO F Series (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834126011)- $499
Obviously you'll be getting more features and better models with the more expensive laptops, but depending on your needs, you can be fine going for the cheaper ones too. These are my top picks (especially the bold ones) based on your budget and your needs, but feel free to look around to find the one you really want. Post which laptop you end up getting! :D
Basically, my advice is: research. You'll be very happy with your purchase if you know exactly what you want and exactly what you're getting in a laptop. I use CNET to get an idea of certain brands and models for good products (ie. laptops) and look at Amazon, Newegg, and other sites for reviews, videos detailing its features, and other stuff. Just because you have that $800 budget, don't think you have to spend it all on a product that you don't need; spend wisely, get what you need and something that appeals to you. Good luck!
