I would do exactly what you did, if I felt the way you do. Don't let anyone coerce you into doing something that you are not comfortable doing. it doesn't matter if "other people do it" it doesn't matter if it "strengthens the bonds of other people's friendships". all that matters is how YOU feel and that YOU are not into messing around with girls and you would feel weird and awkward.
