Ha! I agree with those people, after you "return home" as a fake hero you will probably be unemployed. Plus, there is no assurance that you will not die. The US needs less military not more mindless drones joining it.

I agree to an extent, I don't believe every soldier who goes over abroad and fights in a war is a hero. By definition a hero is someone who does something significant. Partaking in a war on its own doesn't make anyone a hero.
Although back on topic, I do agree that having some form of a military career is a good idea.

And leaving your home and family to defend your country as a soldier even if people hate you for it is nothing. Come on.

I'm not saying its nothing, sure its noble and brave but that doesn't make you a hero. Plus they signed up for it, they knew what they were getting into.

I think that if you really want to do it, go for it. Make sure you know what you're getting into, and that you could end up injured or dead or hating it or scared to death. But if you think it will help boost your self confidence and it is something you want to do, do it, and don't let anyone bring you down.

I don't hate them, please point to a post in which I said I hate soldiers? I just don't think they are classed as heroes like they always are when they are Killed in the course of duty.
As for the original poster. I can't say you won't die but if its something you are passionate about then go for it and live your dream. Have you considered other areas of the military other than being on the field?

Joining the militarry is a wonderful job, but be careful what you do. Do some research before you go. Think where you want to be in the next 15 years. I, in the past year have drastically changed my future a few times. In the beginning I was certain to join the Air Force after high school, after doing some reasearch and actually listening to some of the stuff I was told about it in AFJROTC, I think I may not go. Being in the military is very honorable in my opinion, just be careful because it is easy to get discharged. That may not be an honorary dischange an dcould completely mess up your future. However, if you are to make the years you want to join then it will look really good on resumes and applications as well as get you free education. I say just spend a day or two thinking exactly what you plan to do in life and make sure the military won't hinder your chances. If you want to go for career, then go for it. Just be prepared because you really don't make that much money.

i know they don't make a lot but i am going to college first so i will go in as a commanding officer so they make a decent pay check and if i go career all the money builds up real high because u don't pay for a house u can live on base you don't need a car all that i can get when i am out

You know, you should do what YOU want to do, and what no one else wants you too. If someone else doesn't agree with your choice, they don't have to. You're the one who has to live with it, not them. So what do I say? Go for it. Have fun doing it. I hope it's the right life path for you. Good luck. :)

woah there. if someone wants to give back to thier country im all for it. there are many jobs in the military that do not require frontline service. and what makes them 'fake heroes' exactly? if someone is willing to better the lives of others, they're a hero in my book. and yes, i am intending to serve my country and not be ungrateful about the wonderful privleges it has provided for me, one of which is the right of free speech, which you and i are currently exercising.

I say go for it! It's a career that you can be proud of! What I would recommend is joining in a branch or specialism (such as engineering) that will give you good career prospects once you leave the armed forces as the training is provided for you, but you have to look at the US Forces specialisms for that and compare them to what you want to do in your career. I myself am not going into a career in the British Army, I'm going as an engineer officer into the Royal Navy :)
Feel free to PM me if you want some advice on career options and things, I'll try to help as best I can but again, I do not know the US system.
