Who studies FRENCH at school or elsewhere? How good are you and do you have the opportunity to speak French?

Bravo à tous ceux qui apprennent le Français. C'est une très belle langue, chargée d'histoire et de culture.

I did for three years but I'm dropping it next year because I'm not doing it for GCSE.
I'm actually rather terrible at it, embarrassingly enough. :P & I don't know any French people so I'm safe, I don't need to know it (yet at least)

I study at a private Catholic school, which is run by French nuns, and the neighborhood I live in has a lot of French people, that's why I am studying French right now. It's actually the only foreign language in my school right now.

Something I find very difficult with French is the accent et gu and the gender of nouns.

And I do agree. French is definitely full of rich history and culture.

I did French on the side after school when I was 14 but I never learned much. Last year I had to choose a class to help out with as part of a peer mentoring programme. I chose S1 German (11 yr olds) because I've learnt it for the last 7 years but this changed to French at the last minute. Thankfully the knowledge I had was enough to see me through.

I'm crashing a Higher in it this year if I don't go to university - but uni is the goal

Studied it at secondary school, it's one of those subjects where you actually have to try and learn and study it, learnt that the hard way and now i'm waiting for my GCSE results and i probably failed so bad

I take Spanish in school, but I've also been taking French courses for a few months this year. Gonna pick them up again when I go back to school.

I've been taking French for 11 years, and will continue for another two. I'm basically fluent in it, with the exception of some very obscure grammar.

My middle and high school offers French as one of the languages. in 7th grade you can choose two languages; after that, you have to pick one. I chose Spanish and French when I was in 7th grade

I studied french in school from the age of 8 to the age of 15. It's exhausting, but at least I can travel to France and hold a conversation.

Unless someone actively bilingual comes along, I might have everyone beat at the moment. :P I was learning to read in French when I was two or three, long before I learned to read in English. So everyone has been speaking French around me since I was a baby.

However, I'm only about 3/4 fluent. I don't speak it well. Actually, I do and I don't. I can read in French and listen to conversations and know exactly what is being said but I have difficulty forming more complex sentences on my own. I can do it but not to the same extent as someone truly bilingual.

So besides learning it at home, I also took six mandatory years of it at school. I was meant to be put in a French school but for some reason that never happened. I have plenty of chance to practice. If I wanted to learn more, I could just go live with my grandmother for a week or so and I'd be speaking fluently by the end of it. I kinda regret not taking more classes in high school just for the refresher. (I was pulling 90s in that class easily.)

I don't speak it, but it was offered to me as an alternative to Spanish. Living in Florida I figures it was smarter to take Spanish lol

I have done for the last 6 years, when I was bunged in a French class in year 5. I hated it back then, even more than PE, but I grew to like it. I took it as a GCSE (I get my results in a couple of weeks, if I remember I'll post my grade on this thread), but alas have now left school. As its not something that would be as helpful as other subjects in my future I'm not taking it at A-Level. C'etait matiere genial! (I think that's right ("it's a great lesson")) :)

La phrase "je suis un enfant unique", n'aurait-elle pas dû dire "je suis enfant unique" tout simplement?

I had to take French for the last like 6 years.
Let's say, those 6 years were useless.
And I do have an opportunity to parle le Francais, parce que j'habite a cote de Quebec.

The only other phrases I know how to say are "Est-ce que je peux aller aux toilette?" and "Je ne comprende pas"

J'ai étudié le français pendant cinq ans, mais j'ai étudié l'italien pour l'année dernier et maintentant je ne suis pas en train d'étudier une langue, je vais étudier la littérature anglaise, de langue anglaise, de la sociologie, de la psychologie.

I *think* that makes sense :p I'm a bit rusty having done Italian instead for my final year, I passed French in year 10!

Hello.

I've studied French all my life, mother tongue oblige. I am not sure that if it weren't so, that I would take it. I don't see the "beauty", the "usefulness" or the "culture" : I think it's ugly, it's definitely past its prime in terms of use and every language has a culture, I could go and learn Ainu and recite oral sagas and it would be the same thing.

Honestly? I'd rather learn Chinese. It's ugly as balls but it makes up for it in the other two departments.

I was in an immersion programme. So ten years of exposure to French not counting my family, although that sounds like more than it is because only six of those were immersion years. I used to be not fluent, but able to express myself with a large vocabulary pool and correct grammar, then I moved so I couldn't continue the programme in secondary and most of my verbal ability has gone to the back of my brain from being so unused. I still have great pronunciation and comprehension though. But now I'm stuck because to get into the state university, I need a transcript with two years of foreign language and so I have to take French 1 for the third time in my life. I'm both excited to get my skills back and dreading the memories of all that attention I received the last time I was the lone Frenchie (that's what the immersion kids were all called) in a class of beginners.

I'm sad it's being removed from the curriculum of some schools. I'm not a fan of Spanish, and since I have the French experience I find no use for learning Spanish since I can usually pick out Latin roots and fill in the blanks. But, French is more than a language to me. It's my childhood, and although I don't have a ton of French blood, French is really important in my family too. My aunt used to send me postcards from France and it was really frustrating when every year I'd need to pull out my dictionary for more and more words she wrote. It's such a big part of me, and it disappeared so quickly.

J'espère que c'est le temps.
