Forever Imperfect

I am that weird shy girl in the corner of the classroom that nobody really pays much attention to.
Last year I was talking to one of my friends about her and her girlfriend, she told me that one of the best ways to find out about myself is to go out and have a look for myself.
The only problem is, I have no confidence and a very low self-esteem. Plus there is no-one in my area that I would feel comfortable talking with. She is the only person I have talked to about this kind of thing - she is close enough to me to talk about it but not so close that it makes me feel weird because she doesn't hang about with us a lot. But now I feel like she has forgotten everything that we said to each other.
None of my close friends no a lot about the secrets that I keep closest to me.
I need to be sure of myself before I say anything to them, I just don't know how to do that.
Advice would be greatly appreciated...
