View Full Version : Nuclear Disarmament

It always seems strange to me that in a global view we have weapons that can destroy our planet floating around, literally about 2 clicks away from being launched.
It's an issue that's really shot up after the cold war- Do we still need nuclear weapons in this modern age? What Benefit does it give us if we promise never to use it.
Are you in favour of scrapping nuclear weapons?

I hold the view that the 10 years to create them is far too long in the event that theyre needed, also theyre not used like cluster bombs, never been used since ww2, would you piss off a country that could flatten you in seconds? this is a great advantage in dealing with iran, its better them than us

Diplomacy by force?
Cluster bombs are illegal and have no relevance to this.
Yes, Cuba 'pissed off' America in '63, Iran can do what they want, we would never launch our nuclear weapons against them, We have no right to kill 3 million civilians.
It's better them than us? But they're not a threat to us

theyre never going to be used, if a country is warned it will be scared and if dont stop what theyre doing, its there fault they got nuked and casualties are their fault as they did not respect the warning or evacuate the country

You said they're never going to be used then you talk about their use?
By your theory we could demand Ireland to give us their land, warn them and then nuke them.
What's the point in having something we'll never use?

we may use them in an unlikely situation, im not god, and its better to have them and not need them than need them but not have them

Nuclear weapons suck, but I don't trust that if we disarm, then anyone else will as well. I wouldn't even trust Britain or France let alone China, Russia, Pakistan, India, or North Korea.
The fact of the matter is no country that has nuclear weapons has been directly invaded, ever! I think all nuclear weapons states have been involved in localized conflicts or foreign based wars, but no full scale invasion. It has acted as a deterent for 70 years and I don't see that changing.

It hasn't acted as a useful deterent has it though? I mean Britain lost the Falklands islands, our own sovereign land and the argie's weren't afraid of our nuclear weapons because we would never use them.
But I agree that the actual disarming would be very difficult on an international scale with countries like India and Pakistan

You convince our political enemies to disarm then I'll support as doing it. But that's certainly not something that's smart to "lead the way" on.

The biggest problem is the Israelis in regards to nuclear weapons, North Korea have a rather limited stockpile and could be dealt with, treaties in the past have shown that even at he height of the cold war it's still possible to reach an agreement

Nuclear weapons are good for one thing, killing civilians. Their use is never acceptable. They aren't even a good deterrent, since no one would actually use them.
Also, people speak of North Korea and Iran. Even if a war were to break out, nuclear weapons would be unnecessary. A country like the United States could win easily, without needing to kill large numbers of civilians with nuclear weapons.

I think they have provided some deterent. I really believe that if it weren't for mutually assured destruction in the 50-80's, there likely would have been World War 3 in Europe and elsewhere. Even if nuclear weapons weren't avaiable for that situation, the war would have reshaped the world in a negative way.
I think forming treaties to decrease the number of weapons and also decreasing the size and scale of the weapons so they're more tactical in size and less of a large scale threat are reasonable and achievable goals.

Nuclear weapons are obsolete -- some country needs to get the balls to break the Space Treaty and make light refractors, and in turn begin the second space race. The future is in outer space, not on Earth.

iran HATES the west
Do they now?
Oh, and also, I would support the global disarmament of nuclear weaponry, if it were possible.
And survival instinct is detrimental to the idea that nuclear weapons act as a deterrent. If anything, the idea itself is a deterrent.

What about China and Russia?
I certainly think this should be worked on in diplomatic talks, however the US, UK and France shouldn't disarm until the other countries have. That would be very dangerous.
And we have no idea whether Israel has nukes, by the way.

I'm not a fan of nuclear weapons, or nuclear power plants. If we were to put our efforts and money into more efficient and unfriendly energy vs. nuclear, this world would be a lot cleaner, and could probably run just as well without a big threat over our heads all the time.
I don't see the use of nuclear weapons.

I think that nuclear weapons should be under the control of some international organization, like the UN. In case of any threats to humanity like alien attacks, meteor strikes and things like that, they should be used. That's when I see the only purpose. Now nobody is going to use them because usage is banned, and it ain't worth the civilian casualties.

That's my point, the cold war propaganda hasn't warned off. The Russians really aren't any worse than you are- both countries only care about number one- christ Britian isn't any better. Just don't act like America has never committed questionable acts abroad.
And in regards to Japan, you killed 140,000 odd civilians. Would you be fine would say the Nazis of launching a nuclear V2 at the east coast?
Also you can't be certain, all you know is that 140,000 civilians were killed by President Truman's orders

I never said that did I, the common mistake to make in WW2 is to assume that the Allies were innocent, christ it sickens me what the Nazis and Japanese did, it really does. I'm just saying that America shouldn't of overridden international law and committed an act of such brutality on the basis that Japanese started it.
Also if it wasn't for Japan, you wouldn't of even got involved. You didn't care what the Germans did one bit

Okay, come on, yes we did! You think Americans just wanted to stand by and watch Europe fall to Tyranny and genocide? NO! That would leave us, Canada, and like Australia as the sole civilized countries remaining on Earth! And you Brits may have bad breath and drink too much tea, but many of us are still descendants of your nation.
As for dropping the Atomic Bomb, let me be frank. You should be happy that America didn't use our once in all of history advantage to rule the world. We could have put our flag anywhere we wanted. If we'd been like any other country, we would have enslaved the entire planet. I'm serious. But we didn't, because that was against our values. We only used it just enough to prevent hundreds of thousands or millions of our people from dying, and we haven't used it again to this day.

They did, you were very happy to watch Poland, Austria, France, Denmark, norway and many more fall to the Nazis.
However I do very much respect how hard you yanks fought during the war despite the fact your overpaid, oversexed and over here.
But back to NW, I think the cold war taught us just how worthwhile life is
