Does anybody else on this site compose their own music? I've been taking composition lessons for 5 months now. What about you? I'm working on a piano sonatina. What stuff are you working on?

Well, I have composed a short 40ish second bass solo when at a tempo of 120

I may set up my keyboard and hook it up to my computer or mac to compose more music. For my composing is just playing random stuff until i like what i hear. or then i beat box a rhythm and then(if i like it) i write the rhythm down, then play it while trying to figure out good notes.

hey man, that's not a bad start. I started out like that, just messing around until I came up with stuff that I liked. Keep at it. Writing music doesn't have to be complicated.

Yes, I do. I think the issue is that when someone says they play an instrument, they aren't really musicians. I play guitar and in my experience, I estimate that 10-20% of guitarists know what they are doing. Most never learn anything other than 3-4 major triads in open position and never venture above the 4th fret of the guitar or beyond the key of C. The unfortunate truth is that most are only interested in learning a pop song or two that they enjoy listening to, and aren't interested in exploring the magical qualities of music.

I really enjoy experimenting in alternate tunings although I haven't yet composed an entire piece. I really love the Phrygian sound and am noodling around with that at the moment. Ear training is a big thing for me at the moment as I am taking a Jazz improv course and is an area that is lagging far behind the rest of me.

In regards to the first paragraph, I know what you're saying. For one of the songs I learned, So Far Away by Avenged Sevenfold, it stays in open position for the chords, but the solos had me all the way up at like the 15th fret. I mean, it was a slow passage, but still, it was a lot of work to get the slides just right.
It's the same for violin, which I also play. You have to know positions on the violin neck. I'm studying the 3rd and 5th positions, two of the most common, other than 1st. Most of my peers only know 1st and I doubt many of them will learn to go up the neck.
You have my respect, man. Happy playing/writing!
