I'm in this band, and I'm sorta the front person; I sing and I write most of the songs.
With pretty few exceptions I write all my songs about my depression.
I don't talk to many people about my depression (I've only ever told two friends) and so writing lyrics is pretty much the only way of expressing myself that way.
Here's the thing, no one ever notices.
My two band mates never notice, and members from this other band I'm in don't notice when I show them my lyrics.
I've only really ever had someone thoroughly read my lyrics once (It was a friend of mine who knows I'm depressed). After showing it to her, she got really serious and started comforting me.

Do any other depressed songwriters (or anybody for that matter) out there get what I mean by no one understanding what your songs are about?

i mean, i am not a songwriter(just a bassist) but i have listened to a lot of songs related to depression and cutting. first time i heard them(before i joined vt or was in my darkness) i did not connect the song with depression/self harm. But after join VT and experiencing it, i started making more connections.
People(as far as i know) will not make a connection unless they know your secrets or have experienced it.

Just a beginning guitarist, but I did write some basic songs. No one ever got to read them though...

I am a Music Scholar, and so I can say this:

Something you feel about really strongly, that influences your daily life will always make the best song. It may also be the way that you can get your feelings out to your friends and family.

I agree. Depression isn't something everyone understands and can spot easily like a sore thumb. You'd be surprised by how many people just don't understand why people have to feel so sad all the time or want to commit suicide. Many even frown upon it. They get angry at those people, claiming that they're attention-seekers or self-absorbed or what have you. So don't get frustrated that people don't seem to see what you feel. Not everyone dissects lyrics like that to realize that the songwriter wrote those words for a reason. To express themselves or send a literal message or whatever.

If you really want people to see it, tell them how you're feeling or seep it into conversation. Example: "So yeah, guys, I made another one! It's personal, though." OR: "Wow, I didn't realize how sad I made this song...must have just slipped..." OR: "Guys, I want our listeners to connect. This stuff should come from the heart. You know?" Something along those lines.

Hope I was of some help here. Don't stress.
