Hi everyone, I know this is my first post and should probably be spent on an intro but I'm freaking myself out a bit too much right now to be bothered with it. I've browsed this site before and have finally decided to post because this is the one place I can think of where somebody might understand what I'm going through.

Bottom line is that I'm on the verge of becoming an adult and being on my own. I'm gonna have to learn how to take care of myself and I'm not so sure I can do it. Every little aspect of being independent, and I mean every little thing, scares the hell out of me. I'm not sure that I'll be able to do it and I'm terrified that I'm just going to crash and burn when I the rubber meets the road.

- I don't know where to go to college
- I'm not certain what I want for a career
- I have no idea how I'm going to set up/manage my finances and other things like insurance, banking and savings accounts, checking, retirement funds, and all of that stuff.
- Even minor crap like finding a house and setting up internet, phone, and cable service is freaking me out to the point where it's all I really think about anymore.

Is anybody else understanding this or going through something similar?

Hey there, dear.

First off, welcome to V.T.

Secondly, don't worry about college. I'm going to guess you're a Senior this year? If not, don't worry you've got time.

Picking a college isn't the big deal that it seems like on T.V. and according to your teachers.
There are tons of community colleges that offer the same degrees and bigger ones, and they're a lot less expensive.

As for you're career, you don't have to know. You'll have a few years of basics in college before you have to decide, and you can always change your major anyway. Find something that you like, and figure out how to make money doing it.

As for those other things, you're young. Be young. The time is coming soon that you'll HAVE to deal with all those things, but don't worry on it until you must. It's just going to stress you out. Have fun. Make friend, fall in love, keep your grades up, and just let things fall into place.

There are a lot of online resources to help with your questions about financial situations. On the college issue, I would recommend that you go to a local state school (if you can afford it) and stay in one of the dorms. If you can't afford that go to a local community college and just take basic courses until you figure out what you like then transfer somewhere better. Just take it easy and relax. You don't have to figure out everything right now.

Thanks for the input and reassurance everybody. I think I just needed to get talked off the ledge for a second. It's appreciated.
