I've taken the slow route as that's what I feel most comfortable doing.

the way i did it was i came out to my best mate then a few closer mates then i told my parents so if when they kicked off my friends looked after me although i still havent fully come out to every one

I did the opposite and came out to my friends all at once, but then again they did already know apparently that I was gay. It depends on who you're friends with really, if you think they'd be okay with it, the just go for it method might work best.

With the family though, I think it is better to do it slower than you would with friends. I know that I would not have been able to do the whole come out straight away thing with the parents.

If there's any risk of backlash, you should probably tell just a couple people at a time; if there's no risk of that whatsoever, it's probably more convenient to just come out of the closet in one fell swoop.

i'd suggest coming out slowly to the people you trust the most first, then going further afield

I'd say slowly (that's what I'm trying to do) but you can do it however you'd like.

Slowly. Go the path of least resistance. Really close accepting people first, then slowly move to the haters.
