What does it mean on people's profile when it has referral and a number next to it I've seen it on a coue of people's page?

A "referral" is a field on the registration page when first signing up. Basically if you hear about this site from another member, you'd put their name down in that field. On some forums I've been on it's a number people are proud of, but it really doesn't matter at all here.

My number went up but I've never once mentioned anyone to this site.

It's possible someone watched the forums, saw your name, and put it down :P

Maybe someone just liked you, and decided to put your username name on the referral thing when they signed up. Someone doesn't exactly have to know another member when they sign up. But maybe a member who liked your posts, put your username on "referral" when they signed up for VT.
