Today I got to know that one of my team-mates had to have an emergency surgery this morning for suffering from testicular torsion.
I googled what exactly this was and found that if this condition is not operated within 4 hours it's most likely that the afflicted testicle dies. He had abdominal pain already yesterday after practice and as the operation was only this morning the time span was way more than those 4 hours.
What if they had to remove one of his testicles? Can he still father children? Is it going to affect his future sex-life?
Is there anyone on VT who had the same condition who would be able to tell about his own experience?
I will visit him tomorrow in hospital and I want to be informed to be able to help and support him as good as possibloe if necessary. So any advice and experience is highly appreciated.

You can still reproduce with only one testicle. He may have a slightly lower sperm count, but his future sex life won't be affected much.

Here (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/testicular-torsion/DS01039) is a good overview of the causes, treatment and complications.

Thank you for the link - it's really helpful.
I still hope for his best.

I woke up last Friday morning with all the symptoms of it, googled it, got frightened, and said nothing. It had gotten worse by the following evening (Saturday), so I decided to tell my mother. We went to the doctor and he figured all the signs were pointing towards an infection but he wanted to send me to the hospital for an ultrasound just incase because he didn't want to be taking a chance. When I arrived at the hospital and they heard how long I had these symptoms, they immediately said that if it's a torsion it's very bad news as it is almost impossible that it would be saved. (The only real possibility is that it twisted, untwisted, twisted, untwisted, twisted etc. which would mean it was getting some blood supply at least) After all the tests they did they concluded it was likely to be an infection aswell, but they said that the particular infection is very uncommon at my age so they wanted to operate to make sure, and they wanted to do it fast aswell because if it was torsion there might have been a slim chance of saving the testicle. When they told me they needed to do it fast I assumed maybe in the next few days but no they had be up in theatre within 10 minutes. I woke up to the good news that it was not testicular torsion, however I had an unbelievably painful ballbag as you can imagine..... Still walking around like John Wayne after getting off his horse, will likely be on antibiotics for a fortnight, won't be fully right for close to a month.

That's my story anyway. :P

Good to hear you are ok (considering the circumstances). My friend lost his left testicle due to the torsion, unfortunately. He will get a prosthesis before summer break ends as he is unable to bear to be 'different'.
He was in terrible pain even after the surgery for quite a while. Everything was swollen and sore as they stitched his right testicle to the skin of his scrotum to avoid another torsion.
All the best for you!

Someone I know almost lost them after he went down on a spike climbing over a fence and it actually tore his scrotum. It was over a year ago and I still cringe whenever I think about it.

Oh God, I can't even imagine. That's soooo horrible. I wish him the best, and to everyone reading this, I hope you never have to go something like this.

Thank you for your sympathies.
Fortunately it's 'just' the look and the feeling to be different which bothers him. With the surgery they asured him his second testicle was save from torsion and his sperm count proofed he will be able to father children.
So I really hope for him to feel a lot better after he got his prosthesis.
Yet you are right. It's still a terrible thing to go through.
