A few weeks ago I had (what i think was) my period. At first it was similar to the old dark brown blood that I sometimes get at the beginning of my period so I assumed "fresh" blood would come eventually. Instead, stuff the consistency of normal discharge came out. The color ranged from very light brown to almost black.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this and if I should be worried about it or not.

I've had it like that before.. I was kinda worried about it but then the next period went back to normal. But I'm not actually sure why it was like that :/

It could be normal depending on when it happens. Some causes could be:
*Pelvic inflammation
*Sexually transmitted disease such as vaginal warts, gonorrhea
*Birth control pills can also be one of the cause of black or brown vaginal discharge
*Stress related problems may cause brown discoloration of vaginal flow
Other causes include (http://www.myhealthyfeeling.com/black-period-blood/):
• Stress and depression: stress and depression can cause the uterine lining to thin out which may delay shedding of the endometrial wall. This delay causes blood period to be oxidized and change its color.

• Blood Clotting: blood clots are usually characterized by black period blood discharge. Once the clot subsides, the blood color will return to normal. Blood clotting may also occur after miscarriages.

• Medications: medications like birth control pills and injectable steroids can cause blood discoloration.

On some cases, there are instances that changes in blood color might be an indication of damage in one of the internal parts. Some brown or black discharges may be caused by erosion, rupture of a cyst in the uterus, or injury in the surface and mouth of the uterus.

Other reasons can be an indication of a more serious disorder like yeast infection, PID or pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical cancer, bacterial vaginosis, and STD or sexually transmitted disease.

Dark blood can also be an indication of the beginning of menopausal period or premenopausal stage. Or it can also be an indication of an early sign of pregnancy.

If in doubt -- contact your doctor or pharmacist [if on birth control] for advice
