i dont know what to do

so theres this girl who i know has liked me for a long time and i think is going to try and ask me out. the problem is that my previous relationship was ended abruptly and i am not ready for another one and probably wont be for a long time. i really really hate being mean to people, and i dont know how i could let her down softly. any advice?

Be honest. Like was mentioned above, tell her what you've told us. You just need a little more time after the way your last relationship ended and you feel like you wouldn't really be going into it whole heartedly due to that and wouldn't be able to for a while. Because of that you think it's best that you just leave things as they are for now.
That's if it was me. Also, being a person that doesn't like being mean, I would over the next few times I see her say some compliment, in an effort to make her realize you don't hate her or anything like that. But careful to not do that too much and lead her on.
