I'm getting so sick of seeing ridiculous abbreviations that I either extremely dislike or don't understand. Teenage hood as honestly gone to crap, especially because of these abbreviations.

Stupid little things like; OMG or ILY. Or hippie type things such as: YOLO or SWAG.

Seriously teenagers, what are we coming to? Most of us fail all of our English exams now. I have heard many stories about elderly janitors being smarter than the people who actually work at the newspaper company or something similar.

In one story, a young 21 year old girl got a job at the newspaper and always asked her 43 year old boss how to spell words. Some of them were as simple as; definitely or, realistic. She was sacked a week after starting the job.

We need to seriously improve our English skills or the future of News, journalism and politics is all going to go down the drain!

Then don't use them. Don't associate with people who use them. Don't touch them with a ten foot pole, etc.

what.

Are you honestly trying to define people by how often they use acronyms? If so, you're seriously mistaken. Just because I'll use "omg" in something doesn't mean I'm an uneducated idiot. It's an exclamation people use - get over it.

Seriously teenagers, what are we coming to? Most of us fail all of our English exams now.

Is that so?

1. How do you define "smarter.'
2. "I've heard stories."

Right so she's clearly an example of all the young people in the world.

..? She wasn't very good then, was she. Not sure how that has anything to do with the point you're making, though.

I can talk to friends or casually while using stupid acronyms and then go ahead and write an essay or article without using "so tbh." Really, it's not difficult. What's annoying are the self-righteous people who decide "oh well if you say X word you're an idiot" without considering anything else.

Firstly, let me say that you're incorrect. Those are not abbreviations, they are acronyms. Those two words are not synonymous with one another.

Secondly, as long as they aren't being used in school papers and remain in text messages / IMs, then there is no real harm in them. They're perfectly acceptable. If they weren't, we wouldn't need a term for them such as "acronyms." If you're going to argue those, argue all the acronyms: USA, FDA, CIA, NSA, FBI, FDA, SLED, DHEC, NASA, USMC, etc.

Lastly, it is not the individuals fault that they work for a newspaper. It is their employers fault. If someone is placed in an editorial, or even journalist, position then they should have a minimal degree requirement. Bottom line. They should have already proven that they are adept in the English language.

I agree. I mean, using an abbrivation for an entity is acceptable, but not acronyms like "BTW" and "LOL". Come on people.

Again, these are not abbreviations. They are acronyms. Come on people! An abbreviation shortens a word. An acronym is multiple letter representing a full name.

Mr is the abbreviation of mister.
Dr is the abbreviation of doctor or drive.
FDA is the acronym for the Food and Drug Administration.
USA is the acronym for the United States of America.

There are no rules on what can and can not be an acronym, only rules on when it is acceptable to use an acronym.

I assume by entity he meant an organization. Which is not an abbreviation, but an acronym. People use the terms as if they were synonymous when they are not.

I think I'm dying of Irony, people complaining about grammar and the state of education whilst making grammatical errors.

Me fail English that's unpossible!

I use OMG, HAHA and Lol all the time online when talking to people, I don't use them in an english paper I use it to express my emotions to friends when I'm using the internet, there's no harm in that is there?

Exactly my point. If you're not being evaluated for a job or graded for an assignment, it's not hurting anyone.

No harm.

It's just there actually are people who use acronyms born on the internet or through ''txt spaek'' in real life conversation.

Abbreviation are just part of the world we live in. If you don't like them you can lead my example and not use them, but I don't think they will go away. Sorry.

I don't like text talking/acronyms like 'btw', 'brb'. But it's okay to use a little bit in places such as chat rooms, and even forums like VT. Of course, you obviously shouldn't actually use it in an ESSAY you're typing or writing, or something else that would make you look bad if you do.

Excessive amounts are annoying, but there's really no harm in them if they're used on the internet between friends.

As for grammar errors, that's a whole other story.
