SAO PAULO (AP) — Police say enraged spectators invaded a football field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body after he stabbed a player to death.

The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.

VIOLENCE IN BRAZIL: Protester dies at Confederations Cup

The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body."

Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.

Police have arrested one suspect.

Protests in Brazil aren't for no reason at all, seriously if this happened during the confederations cup just imagine what will happen during the world cup. Although I am not surprised considering that Brazilian fans are some of the most passionate ones, and passion can lead to mad actions.

This wasn't at the Confederations Cup. That was a link stuck in the middle of the article, if you bothered to read it.

This was an amateur match, where a referee decided (for some reason) to bring a weapon onto the field. The fact that there was a fistfight between a player and a referee is also pretty bad. The fact is - this was an event that was unregulated...there were no sanctioned (by FIFA or a Brazilian league) teams or referees here. This event was totally independent of any organized soccer/football.

This article grossly misrepresents this. There is NO way ANY of this happens at a regulated, sanctioned match....even at the lowest of leagues. The referee wouldn't have a weapon, and if there was a fistfight between a ref and a player - they would probably both be suspended for life. Let alone that the ref was killed and beheaded....this was a match that was pretty far off the map for all this to happen, and there to be no security to even attempt to stop it.

Probably a better article. (http://blog.foxsoccer.com/post/54702157659/brazilian-referee-butchered-by-fans-after-killing)

I'm also moving this to VT Chronicle, since I really don't see a debate here.

WOW, that's crazy! That would never happen at a tennis match
