View Full Version : Some thoughts about our debates on here.

I just wanted to post about some of the things I've seen on this forum. I welcome your thoughts. I'm sorry if I come off a bit irritated, these things just bother me.

First of all, come on people, how hard is it to capitalize at least half the time? Yes, that means you britishboy! Little grammar mistakes like that weaken your argument.

Second, some of you seem to really like to use the "f" word. The rules say it's acceptable for use in order to "vent" an express your feelings, but seriously people, sometimes it just looks like you want you either want attention or don't have a big enough vocabulary to say something else. Especially when you use it four or five times in one post.

From the forum rules:

Language: Swearing and cursing may help some people 'vent' and/or express their feelings. Minimal use of curses (swears) is considered acceptable. If curses are directed at a member (or members), they may be seen as a violation of our no fighting/flaming/bashing/trolling policy

Finally, I think that we should try not to so much associate the person's idea's so much with the person. You disagree with the idea, not that person. You could potentially change that person's mind. Ultimately, my goal on here is to try to make people agree with my ideas, either that or realize why somebody else's argument is actually correct and better develop my opinions. I don't know if there are people on here who LIKE getting irritated and post on here to do that, but that's what seems to be happening a lot lately. I know I've insulted people for there beliefs; I was irritated and not really thinking about it and I'd like to apoligize for that. Thank you and I hope you'll consider my thoughts here.

From one grammar Nazi to another: Get over it. This is the internet, kid. People don't exercise proper grammar around here as much as you might like them to. Deal with it. If you're concerned about their grammar it shows that you're paying attention to more than just their argument. Their grammar doesn't matter, the content of their post does.

Again, get over it. For some people, present company included, it's a part of their language. I could insert any plethora of words in place of "fuck" or other obscenities. The thing is that's how I talk. I cuss a lot; however, it's not like I'm running around telling you to go fuck yourself sideways because you're wrong. As was said in another thread, for some people it shows their passion in the topic. Not all of us enjoy communicating in dry text. Try breathing a little bit of life and aspiration into your own posts some time.

Not going to happen, brother. Welcome to ROTW where everyone is right and everyone is wrong. As often as I find myself acknowledging other people's arguments I've still never found anyone who changed my mind on a topic. Likewise, I've never witnessed anyone changing their minds either. It doesn't happen around these parts, unfortunately.

You make some good points here, but I just want to touch on a few things.

"Their grammar doesn't matter, the content of their post does."

Haha try telling that to a newspaper editor. I don't no about you, but it's a challenge for me NOT to capitalize. I guess some people haven't developed that same habit.

"Try breathing a little bit of life and aspiration into your own posts some time."

You don't have to swear to "breath a little aspiration,". What's wrong with using "crazy", "twisted" or other adjectives instead? At least half the time people. For some on here, it seems like the default word.

Also, a newspaper editor's job isn't to report or debate nor do they apply to an online forum. Comparing a newspaper article to VT is ridiculous.

No, you don't. I'll give you that. But assuming people come off as less intelligent (taken from another post of yours) simply because they swear is nothing more than an uneducated remark. The use of swear words doesn't really decrease the power of your argument. Honestly, if you've ever taken a public speaking course you'd know that you're encouraged to use simpler vocabulary that your audience can understand.

Who is the audience? Teenagers. Teenagers cuss a lot. It's actually quite understandable to use swearing as a means to increase the "punch" in your words when talking to teenagers. Now, if you were giving an important speech to an adult audience, then you might wish to choose other adjectives.

Okay, fair enough. VT isn't a newspaper, and teenagers do cuss a lot. However, I'm not one of those teenagers, and just think the world would be a better place if that happened less often :)

It would be a bit dry if you ask me. The F-bomb is quite appropriate sometimes depending on it's context. If you're one who is against it's use, just don't use it. I promise you, the people around here won't stop using it simply because it offends someone. I know I won't.

You don't offend people if you want them to agree with you. That's my point.

The problem seems to be you, not the community.

So what if people don't capitalise? You can still read it cant you? If you can't, I'd suggest going to non-English speaking website where perhaps you might then better understand the language, because it's one thing to criticise a website for having unethical backward views and then another to then say that everyone has to use correct grammar and direct it at certain members, potentially embarrassing them.

The word fuck is literally just a word. I would understand it if you were against racial slurs or remarks regarding disabilities, but it's not. That's where the issue matters, not because you were brought up to not say it. I agree entirely with Josh, it probably is relevant to context, and it's not up to you to dictate what members post if it doesn't breach community guidelines.

And lastly, no one is actually offending anyone in discussions. Just because you may be losing a debate doesn't mean people are offending you. You just either need to agree to disagree, accept the counter argument or find another way of attacking it. You don't need to take offence to it unless it is explicitly said in a debate that it is a personal attack, in which case a member of staff will review it.

When I saw the title I knew it would be some sort of I'm more divine than you are.

Mate you've been on this forum for less than a month, nothing annoys me more than when someone comes in thinking that they own the debates section, your post is pretty close to back-seating modding which I find very annoying, if you have an issue about people swearing then leave it to the moderators to deal with.

People on here don't tend to change their views. Trust me that's why threads go on for about 20 pages sometimes.

We're not a soapbox, we don't have elections every 5 years. It's a debate section on a teenage help site-it's not Washington.
