The media plays a large role in the development of our viewpoints. What news media outlet(s) do you use most (newspapers, news channels, radio networks, news websites, etc)? What are some of your favorite commentators/columnists?
I mostly get my news from:
The Wall Street Journal (national business newspaper)
The Oregonian (my local newspaper)
Fox News Channel (national TV news network)
Some of my favorite commentators/columnists:
John Stossel (talk show host)
Bill O'Riely (Number 1 rated talk show host)
Sarah Palin (Former VP Nominee / commentator)
Charles Krathammer (Columnist)
Sean Hannity (talk show host)
John Stewart (for laughs, anybody who actually gets their news from that guy is an idiot!)
One more thing I'd like to ask: Do you think that there is a lot of bias towards one political ideology or a set of ideas in the general media? I know in America, the media generally favors Democrats and liberals; probably because the vast majority are Democrat.

Bias will exist in any institution, be it CNN or Fox News. As of yet, I don't really think any "mainstream" media corporation has found their way around that.
Personally I try to listen to both "sides" in American media just to see how much they differ :P

I don't understand why anyone in America even watches Fox news, for christ sake the channel practically rigged the 2000 election. Saying that all Media is pretty much the same, they operate for my money and money alone. They don't give a crap about informing the people, I mean every journalist in Washington knew about Kennedy's affairs in the 60's but they didn't dare so anything.

Being a Brit I've watched precious little American news channels and when I do it's in the form of certain segments that have been uploaded to youtube. I have seen several of Bill O'Reilly that left me with an impression of a man with an extraordinary ego and little brains to fit it - there were a few where he tried to argue in favour of intelligent design with Richard Dawkins and put in a monstrously bad show. "No spin zone", my ass.
FOX is unabashedly right-wing while the others at least try to be balanced from what I've seen, but fail quite badly and are fairly left-wing. This is why the BBC is a great institution - it's not allowed to favour one side over another, it simply reports news as a news broadcaster should.

The BBC doesn't have the greatness history though, they allowed Jimmy Saville to hang around for way too long

Sarah Palin (Former VP Nominee / commentator)
Sarah Palin is barely qualified to comment on a brown paper bag or to offer a synopsis of a Magic School Bus episode, let alone open her mouth about anything resembling politics. What on Earth do you like about her aside from the fact that she is vaguely fuckable?

Oh god...I can only imagine the brainwashed views you have. Palin, O'Riely, Hannity, those are practically the dumbest people in America shouting the dumbest stuff in America.
I would hope you'd wise up and start investigating the real news to find your own views.
As for me, I watch none of them since they are literally lies at this point, only news I receive is from scarce sources on the Internet. For any political stuff, I mainly read the bills myself to get a real opinion on them....
P.S. The real bills are so much different than anything Fox says

So you don't read any news. You must be really informed.
So you just read the bills. So you read Obamacare cover to cover? How about the immigration reform bill? Or are you still working on it?
I watch Fox, I read the Wall Street Journal, and I read my liberally biased local paper. It seems like a balanced combination to me. I think people just think Fox is so right wing because they think the other media outlets are centrist; they aren't. This messes up their frame of reference.
Sarah Palin is barely qualified to comment on a brown paper bag or to offer a synopsis of a Magic School Bus episode, let alone open her mouth about anything resembling politics. What on Earth do you like about her aside from the fact that she is vaguely fuckable?
Sarah Palin was simply attacked by the liberally biased media because they didn't want the first female Vice President to be a Republican.
But you haven't answered my question: Where do you get your news from? Who are your favorite commentators?

First, just because your religious doesn't mean your stupid. Just because you believe in intelligent design over evolution doesn't, either.
Like I've said Fox simply seems right wing because the other supposibly "centrist" news agencies mess with your frame of reference. And MSNBC doesn't even try to be balanced, come on, there motto is "Lean Forward"!
And I don't know a whole lot about BBC, but it seems to me that anytime the government is operating a media outlet that media outlet is going to try to she'd positive light on whatever the people in power are doing.

Sarah Palin was simply attacked by the liberally biased media because they didn't want the first female Vice President to be a Republican.
No, it is her lack of culture and political knowledge that did her in, and her "refudiation" of policies that enter into common sense, like a public health care plan. Granted though, she isn't as bad as Michele Bachmann. But would you really have liked a woman who thought Africa was a country in the vice-presidential seat?
But you haven't answered my question: Where do you get your news from? Who are your favorite commentators?
I get my news mainly from the CBC and a Quebec newspaper called "Le Devoir". I don't like commentators as they bring their bias with them when they talk about the news, leading to a legion of misinformed sheeple, but I generally like what Mathieu Bock-Côté has to say on Quebec nationalism.

First, just because your religious doesn't mean your stupid. Just because you believe in intelligent design over evolution doesn't, either.
I concede your first. I didn't wish to imply that religious people were stupid, and I don't think I did, but alright. I do think Bill O'Reilly is a stupid man who happens to be religious, but that doesn't necessarily mean I think there's a correlation.
I don't entirely agree with your second. The evidence for evolution is incontravertible, while a "prime mover" is both an unnecessary additional postulation (making Occam's Razor decisive) and entirely devoid of evidence. So yes, I would say it is an anti-intellectual belief based on an a priori desire for religion to be true, even if I wouldn't go as far as "stupid". (I don't entirely want to debate that here, but until we're warned by a mod I welcome back and forth on it :P)

But I don't view the others as centrist; I concede that FOX alone is right-wing and the others are left-wing. From my own limited viewing, though, I think FOX is further right from centre than MSNBC is left from centre. Maybe I'm only watching particularly awful segments on youtube, but some of it is hilariously right-wing.
And I don't know a whole lot about BBC, but it seems to me that anytime the government is operating a media outlet that media outlet is going to try to she'd positive light on whatever the people in power are doing.
The BBC is paid for with a license fee by all UK residents who have a TV, and is independent from direct government intervention. There are a lot less "commentators" than I see on US TV, and generally when an issue is to be debated someone is brought in from both sides. Typically there's just a list of news with little to no commentary. In that sense it's a lot less spicy than news in the US, but also a lot less biased.

Sky news if it's something important but otherwise I just go on Guardian online, in regards to the 2008 and 2012 elections they may of favoured Obama but they didn't call a state like Fox did in 2000 which ended up with Bush becoming President despite losing.
In regards to Palin, the media didn't want a nut to became VP. She was worse than Dan Qualye, she doesn't support civil unions, abortions in the case of rape or incest and she doesn't believe that climate change is man made. She also claimed to have foreign policy experience because Alaska is near to Russia. Even Mccains staff didn't let her have interview time, she was a liability

Lol your "intelligence" must have been thrown out the window when you started to think that Sarah Palin was someone worth listening to. All mainstream media is biased and CNN is as bad as Fox. Any news that I do listen to is from individual Journalists and not media companies that are easily bought out or at least way too scared to speak the truth.
And she was not attacked for that reason, she was attacked because she is utterly stupid (literally like an IQ below 50) she knows nothing and conjures up weird opinions on almost every issue. That is why regular well-minded people did not want her in any sort of office.

Sarah Palin's "lack of culture" hurt her? What is that supposed to mean? She's an Alaskan! As for her opposition to national healthcare, how does that seperate her from virtually every other Republican in this entire country, and like half of independants? I'd like you to give me some real examples of a "common sense policy" she opposes yet the vast majority of the American public supports, as you claim. She was very electable, and I rest my case that the mainstream media didn't want the first female VP to be a Republican.

You've obviously never been to Alaska. They're's the biggest military presence there of any state in the union. Being governor of that state certainly would give you foreign policy experience.
And Al Gore most certainly didn't win. They did how many recounts? And did he ever come out ahead in any of them? Anyhow, I'm sure glad he didn't win. He's the most arrogant hypocritical politician I've ever seen, and God knows how he would have handled 9/11.
As for not believing climate change is solely man made, that's a pretty mainstream belief, too. But that's a debate for another thread; you can start one on it if you want and I'll comment.

I don't really agree. While I think one salient factor is that FOX is the only news channel Republicans can watch to make themselves happy (and so garners many views that way whereas liberals have more choice of which channel to watch), I very much dispute the idea that stupid people can't be successful in TV. I've watched and enjoyed O'Reilly's show several times because he's so bafflingly stupid; that's a rating number right there. The show is exciting; he gets angry and waves his arms around like a baboon, and regularly insults all his guests that don't agree with him. That makes him popular but no less thick-witted.

I do believe so and me being a democrat, I have to say media is more favorable on the democratic republics, and at the same time I can see why. Democracy is America, and further more i'd like to add that republicans are over dramatically dominating the senates and also the H.O.R. So I think to give a good shot to Democrats it is necessary to have at least something to back you up... which in America the case is media. But what about the other parties... nothing

She didn't conclude a signal trade deal or mission with Russia, she has no foreign policy credibility but she claimed that she did when as said above she had no experience. You need to either have outside experience or a committee experience in congress.
They did a Recount in Flordia but it was stopped by the supreme court which was filled with Daddy's friends so good old George bush was fine.
One that topic I know Al Gore isn't perfect but he's much matter than Bush who has been voted by Historians and scholars very lowly in the rankings.
She doesn't think that man has any impact at all, she thinks it's 100% nature.
The Bottom line is that the electorate didn't like her or want her as VP. Case Closed

When you are talking about someone in the political realm, just there political opinions should be enough to make the case that she is stupid. Her political ideas are a strong reflection of her actual intelligence.

Okay, I'll give you that she really didn't have that much foriegn policy experience. But she had more then a governor of any other state. And that's certainly not the reason she lost; McCain had plenty of that to contribute to the ticket.
The Supreme Court did exactly what I would have done had it been any president. The bottom line is we needed a president to prepare to assume office before inauguration. Every indication thus far was that Bush had won, so that's who they chose.
Of course historians are going to rank Bush low. Do I need to start a thread on the bias in academia, too?
And regardless, even if the majority of America doesn't like her the media still needs to treat her fairly.

Your point about Fox viewership sounded plausible so I wanted to check it out. Here's what I found: There's only a 6% spread between the regular viewers of Fox who are Republican versus democrat. Here's that data:
http://www.pewresearch.org/files/old-assets/publications/1395-1.gif
That's actually the smallest spread of any of the major American networks, so Fox actually has the least partisan tilted viewership numbers of all! So your theory that it's simply successful because it's the only thing conservatives watch is wrong. They actually do do a superior job, and both Democrats and Republicans think so, and so they watch them. That's why they are the top network.
As for BBC, without government support they would lose a lot of revenue. So they have to please the government to keep their "corruption". It smells like chrony capitalism to me.

I must admit my surprise. But nonetheless, the point I raised was that the largest group of Republicans will choose to watch FOX because it sits best with their ideology, which the table shows. If the standard viewership figures for Republicans (averaging ~20%) for the other networks was upheld, FOX would not be the highest rated, but due to the much higher amount of Republican viewers (more Republicans watch FOX than MSNBC and CNN put together), the overall total is higher.
Secondly, the table seems to indicate that Democrats choose to watch multiple channels (maybe I could cheekily suggest that this shows Democrats are more willing to seek both sides of the news?), due to their much higher total percentage than Republicans. A better question than "what stations do you regularly watch?" would have been "what is your single most-watched station?" - in which case I'd be interested to see how the Democrat percentage for FOX changes. (My bet would be on downwards, increasing the ratio and removing your claim that they are bipartisan, which seems to be due to funky numbers)

I read Večernje Novosti, both the newspaper when I find it, but I mostly read it online. I also watch Al Jazeera, those are my only reliable sources. But why on Earth you watch CNN and FOX News? They are both right-wing and Bill O'Riley is a baboon who is insulting his guestsfor not agreeing with him. We have no commentators here, sometimes on the B92 network, they bring two politicians who are from opposite party and they debate.

Your not trying to defend George bush are you? This is a guy who firstly skipped the Draft in Vietnam but was happy to send troops to their death. He only became a christian so that he could get into Congress, he took cocaine, crashed his family car into a tree, challenged his dad to a fight, declared that stem cell research was evil, resided over a patriot act which was close to illegal, introduced massive tax cuts to his Christmas card list and denied the fundamental right of marriage to millions of Americans

This^^ Although Obama is just as bad and basically has continued all of those bad things from Bush.
When it comes down to it, the President is not in control like many people think he is. The people in the House and Senate are in control (corporate interest as well?) so to think that a person who is only at the top for four years, will change much, is a little silly.
The President actually has to break his/her own beliefs and ideals/plans to conform with what the other actual leaders wants.
The US President in nothing more than a Puppet.

Of course there are but not if they believe any of the three things I just stated. Tea Party members are primarily dumb though, there is a difference between a Ron Paul republican and a Palin.
Dude, you are demeaning a large segment of the population! Does anybody else on here honestly think that the homeless guy on the side of the road who voted for Obama- Biden is smarter then the engineer who voted for McCain - Palin?
You can't judge a person's intelligence by their political viewpoints! I disagree with what Obama believes, however I know he is sure a heck of a lot more intelligent then you and me, he went to Harvard for Pete's sake and we're just teenagers. On the same token, just because you disagree with Palin doesn't make her stupid!
Let's look at the major networks viewership figures:
http://stateofthemedia.org/files/2012/03/30_Cable_Viewership-Up-Over-All-But-Varied-by-Channel1.png
Fox has about twice as many viewers as the runner up. Even with 68% of Republicans trusting it most (from another poll I found), it still needs A LOT of liberal viewers to do that.
"maybe I could cheekily suggest that this shows Democrats are more willing to seek both sides of the news,"
I think we Republicans just prefer to only be lectured half the time by liberals. I know you aren't denying the liberal bias, but what pundits on the other networks that share our views? You know, not everybody working at Fox is Republican. What about Greta, Colmes, and Geraldo? And they sure seem to have a lot more bipartisan makeup of guests then the other networks. I'm sure they'd entertain Obama if he got the guts to actually have real questions asked to him for once :)
I guess the point I'm trying to makes is that Fox News is a relatively fair network an has high viewership because of it.
I read Večernje Novosti, both the newspaper when I find it, but I mostly read it online. I also watch Al Jazeera, those are my only reliable sources. But why on Earth you watch CNN and FOX News? Al Jeezera hates America and has aired some horrific things. I trust MSNBC way more then I trust them!
Who told you CNN was right wing? Your incorrect about that, and I'm pretty sure every American on here would agree. CNN was very probama.
Bill O riely has been on the air for like thousands of episodes. He's gonna have some incidents like that. At least he doesn't do it like every day like Chris Matthews. And he's no where near as arrogant.
Politicians are great, (actually generally not) but at the end of the day they can't be an expert on everything. You need commentary.

I'm not happy with the way Bush treated the deficit, however I'm sure as hell glad we didn't have an environmentalist in charge when we needed to go to war!
He took cocaine? Hadn't heard that media fabrication before. And how can you know his motives for being Baptized?

Such a system is downright evil." –-Sarah Palin, in a message posted on Facebook about Obama's health care plan, Aug. 7, 2009
3. "All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years." --Sarah Palin, unable to name a single newspaper or magazine she reads, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008 (Watch video clip)
4. "Well, let's see. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So, you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but ―" --Sarah Palin, unable to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with other than Roe vs. Wade, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008 (Watch video clip)
5. "'Refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!'" --a Tweet sent by Sarah Palin in response to being ridiculed for inventing the word "refudiate," proudly mistaking her illiteracy for literary genius, July 18, 2010
6. "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed." --Sarah Palin, botching the history of Paul Revere's midnight ride, June 3, 2011
7. "But obviously, we've got to stand with our North Korean allies." --Sarah Palin, after being asked how she would handle the current hostilities between the two Koreas, interview on Glenn Beck's radio show, Nov. 24, 2010
8. "Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible." --Sarah Palin, defending her fiery campaign rhetoric in the wake of the Arizona shooting massacre by invoking a phrase ("blood libel") that typically refers historically to the alleged murder of Christian babies by Jews, Jan. 12, 2011
9. "We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn't that ironic?" --Sarah Palin, admitting that her family used to get treatment in Canada's single-payer health care system, despite having demonized such government-run programs as socialized medicine that will lead to death-panel-like rationing, March 6, 2010
10. "Ohh, good, thank you, yes." --Sarah Palin, after a notorious Canadian prank caller, posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, complimented her on the documentary about her life, Hustler's "Nailin Paylin," Nov. 1, 2008 (Read more about the prank call, watch the video and see the transcript)

Two can play at that game. Here's some things that Obama has said:
"When I meet with world leaders, what's striking -- whether it's in Europe or here in Asia..." -mistakenly referring to Hawaii as Asia while holding a press conference outside Honolulu, Nov. 16, 2011
"We're the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad." —Cincinnati, OH, Sept. 22, 2011 (I'll be honest, we Americans aren't THAT amazing!)
"The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries." --Tampa, Fla., Jan. 28, 2010
"UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? It's the Post Office that's always having problems." –attempting to make the case for government-run healthcare, while simultaneously undercutting his own argument, Portsmouth, N.H., Aug. 11, 2009."
"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong." (There were no caskets in the audience)
"I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go." --at a campaign event in Beaverton, Oregon (near where I live! I wish I was there to watch...would've been fun to laugh in his face!)
"The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, you know, there's a reaction that's been bred in our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that's just the nature of race in our society." (Talk about stereotyping!)
"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed." --on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people."
"What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith..." --in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, who jumped in to correct Obama by saying "your Christian faith," which Obama quickly clarified.
All politicians make gaffes. Sarah Palin and Obama are no different. The point is you can't judge their intelligence by their gaffes, unless there is an excessive number. Care to see some of Biden's?

If your political ideas are things like anti-marijuana, or anti-gay marriage, or pro-austerity. Then those ideas are a reflection of intelligence because it shows that you do not know a whole lot.
The only problem with this argument is that "anti-marijuana" people (as you put it) have actual facts to stand behind, as do the ones for the legalization of it. It's not as clear cut as legalizing gay marriage.

Back on topic: I tend to stay away from most news outlets like CNN, CBS, Fox and the like. I feel that they simply rehash the same stories over and over on a 24 hour cycle and do nothing to help me learn what's actually happening. I use other sources, like Al Jazeera, Reason, and occasionally the BBC. But most of the time, it's just the first two.

Sarah Palin's "lack of culture" hurt her? What is that supposed to mean? She's an Alaskan!
No, what that is supposed to mean?
If you want to be VP of the most powerful country on the planet, it behooves one to have a modicum of political and academic culture. Palin has neither and it has nothing to do with being an Alaskan, just has to do with being stupid.
As for her opposition to national healthcare, how does that seperate her from virtually every other Republican in this entire country, and like half of independants?
It doesn't, they're all stupid in my book.
I'd like you to give me some real examples of a "common sense policy" she opposes yet the vast majority of the American public supports, as you claim. She was very electable, and I rest my case that the mainstream media didn't want the first female VP to be a Republican.
Common sense policies :
-national health care plan
-not teaching Creationism in school
-not denying GW
They don't have to be supported by a majority of Americans as the majority of humans do not have common sense. Praise be to our education system!

Dude, the whole idea of the tea party is that the political class is getting too much power. I know you may trust congress to run 300 million lives, but the bottom line is when government gets into our business, you have an inefficient monopoly that steals from the people as opposed to a system that simply creates the conditions for personal success. That's why, in America, the government was designed so it did what the people want, and we shouldn't tolerate it if they don't.
Palin has tons of culture. She's arguably the founder of the Tea Party movement, for pete's sake! Have you seen her talk? She's like the new Reagan, and she's not even an actor! People loved her, and Alaska gave her sky high approval ratings as governor.
And how many times do I have to go over this: Your not stupid because your a liberal, and I'm not stupid because I'm a conservative! End of. Your political leanings doesn't represent your intelligence. I'll use this example again: Is the better on the street smarter then Palin because he voted for Obama? Of course not. Likewise, is the gun nut whose marching with his semi-auto weapon in the state capital building who voted for Romney smarter then Obama? Of course not!
