(CNN) -- Public transit in San Francisco came to a screeching halt Monday morning as Bay Area Rapid Transit unions went on strike.
The strike began at midnight (3 a.m. ET) Monday after union leaders walked out of last-minute pay negotiations with BART, hours before their four-year contract was set to expire.

About 400,000 commuters use BART every day in the San Francisco Bay area, BART spokesman Rick Rice said.

"The public doesn't deserve to be punished," Rice said. "We are sorry they have decided to strike despite the fact we are willing to negotiate. The district is prepared to return to talks and get this finished."

Josie Mooney, spokeswoman for SEIU Local 1021, also lamented the impact on the community.

"A strike is always the last resort, and we have done everything in our power to avoid it. Unfortunately, BART seems intent on forcing a strike," Mooney said in a statement. "We are disappointed that BART's failure to bargain honestly and fairly means that hundreds of thousands of Bay Area commuters have to suffer."

At odds

The dispute centers around pay and benefits.

"They've asked for (a) 21% pay increase," Rice said. "We've gone from offering 4% over four years to 8% over four years."

Rice also said BART also offered to reduce the amount of employee contributions originally requested for pension and medical benefits.

But local SEIU union President Roxanne Sanchez said workers are fed up.

"Years of layoffs have affected public safety and services. Crippling cuts have not just made our jobs more difficult, but put undue strain on our livelihoods, our families and our communities," she said in a statement.

"Believing in good jobs that pay fair wages, offer health care and a secure retirement — these are modest ideals. These are UNION ideals."

------

Honestly, in my opinion, the Union(s) are just being selfish. 65,000 and up, for the work that they're doing is PLENTY. Hell, if they want to complain about it, there's plenty of people who would want to work for BART (including me) and would be more than happy with the current pay check.

But nope, they decided to make BART look bad cause they want more than the fairly rational 8% increase, walked off the job, and forced 400,000 people to try to find another way to get to work and make it fucking hell for everyone.

It's hard to take and individual or group seriously when they demand a 21% pay increase. Seems like a lot of money for .... what they do...

Found this from 2005:Regardless, management says it can't afford to continue paying workers what it says is an average of more than $90,000 a year in wages and benefits, because the cost of benefits is rising rapidly and the system has a $24 million deficit in this year's budget.

Contracts for 2,700 BART employees expired Friday.

BART says it already pays average wages of $64,428 a year for members of its two largest unions, the Service Employees International Union 790 and the Amalgamated Transit Union 1555. Workers in those unions, which represent 2,300 of the district's nearly 3,000 employees, also receive an average benefits package of $29,750.

I think the unions are being unreasonable. Accept the 4 – 8% pay raise over the next four years. I feel for them, though. I hope you all realize that 65K is not a lot in San Francisco. Do any of you live in the area?

Why don't they just shut up and do their job? Public sector unions are monopolies, and I wish the government wouldn't cave into them so easily.
