View Full Version : Questionnaire: Your Photography

Hi guys. I've been enduring a prolonged lapse of motivation lately and I've been wanting to ask TV photographers (of all levels of ability) some questions about the value of their images. This was originally planned to be a short & quick "what/how do you..." type of post, but I decided that asking various questions about photography could be a useful contribution to the community. So here they are:

1: What influenced or caused you to start practicing photography? (Convenience, fun of taking pictures, inspiration from artists, treasuring moments, etc.)
2: What or who inspires you to keep shooting? (Same as above? Or another reason?)
3: How do you make use of your photos? What do you mostly use them for? (Art, sharing with friends and family, online sharing, documenting moments, etc.)
4: Have you made efforts to improve your abilities or the quality of your images? (Books, online videos/courses, photo sites/blogs, equipment upgrades etc.)
5: What keeps your finger on the shutter button and not the delete button? In other words, what motivates you to keep & value your images? - I rather not provide any examples as I want to preserve the purpose of this thread and hear what you all have to say.

With your responses I hope to better understand the similarities and differences between photographers on this site. I also hope to find some encouragement for my own photography. If you have any questions concerning my reasons for making this thread or about me feel free to ask :)

1: What influenced or caused you to start practicing photography? (Convenience, fun of taking pictures, inspiration from artists, treasuring moments, etc.) I know that it probably sounds stupid, but control. I control what the final image looks like, I have the power to change the camera settings and post-process till I get what I want. I found photography while recovering from an ED while I wanted to obsessively control my weight/exercise/food. Photography was something I could control (that wasn't taking a toll on my health.)
2: What or who inspires you to keep shooting? (Same as above? Or another reason?) I find Nikki Sixx an inspiration; his work is beautiful and touching and he started photography while recovering from a heroin addiction.
3: How do you make use of your photos? What do you mostly use them for? (Art, sharing with friends and family, online sharing, documenting moments, etc.) I usually keep them for myself, some I upload to Flickr, some I've done and submitted for my AP Photography class.
4: Have you made efforts to improve your abilities or the quality of your images? (Books, online videos/courses, photo sites/blogs, equipment upgrades etc.) <--- All the bolded ones. I'm working on strobist lighting now.
5: What keeps your finger on the shutter button and not the delete button? In other words, what motivates you to keep & value your images? - I rather not provide any examples as I want to preserve the purpose of this thread and hear what you all have to say. Well, just seeing growth and how I've progressed really makes me feel good and accomplished.

1. It was fun, I wanted to capture nice moments, and because i moved to an area where there's a lot of sexy sports cars and I like sports cars. So I take pictures of them :)

2. Me

3. Sharing, documenting, put them in folders and look at them later. Thanks for the memories. It tastes like you only sweeter.

4. GPS location tags to the photos so I can organize them by location. And I upgraded from my 2mp crappy phone camera to a 16mp canon. :P

5. Well, I don't delete photos unless they're blurrier than me at 4am, but I don't worry about it because I have a good few terrabytes of disks.

1: What influenced or caused you to start practicing photography? (Convenience, fun of taking pictures, inspiration from artists, treasuring moments, etc.)

Fun, I found it really fun. I also saw photos that my friends took and wanted to do the same.

2: What or who inspires you to keep shooting? (Same as above? Or another reason?)

Myself.

3: How do you make use of your photos? What do you mostly use them for? (Art, sharing with friends and family, online sharing, documenting moments, etc.)

I share them on facebook, no other place really to put them.

4: Have you made efforts to improve your abilities or the quality of your images? (Books, online videos/courses, photo sites/blogs, equipment upgrades etc.)

I've been reading books and photo sites. When I get some birthday money, I hope to get my first DSLR.

5: What keeps your finger on the shutter button and not the delete button? In other words, what motivates you to keep & value your images? - I rather not provide any examples as I want to preserve the purpose of this thread and hear what you all have to say.

I actually delete a lot of my shots because I think they aren't good enough, but the ones I keep, I keep them because I want to share them. I love positive reception.
