View Full Version : Spoilers

This was suggested a few times but a solid decision was never reached.
Last time a ton of people were in favor but it just was never added.
If you don't know what a spoiler is, see here:

(Sorry for the german, but you can see the expandable spoilers with a show/hide button)
This could be used for puzzles, or to consolidate long posts (like my virus guide or things of guide nature)
Overall I think it would make long guide threads or sig shops look a bit cleaner and more effective.
So VT, what do you think?

+1 from me. It will make the forum look cleaner and important posts will have a better appeal to people.

I have always and will always support this idea.
Unfortunately, it is a complete pain in the ass for mods to have to click every single spoiler.
The only way this is practical is if you could somehow make an option for users to have spoilers automatically set to "open." Otherwise, I don't see many of the staff going along with this as they haven't in the past.

I wish they would be added, but it's been suggested so many times before and not implemented. Hopefully this time?

Been suggested before, always shot down, but I will always support it. We should also be able to add a title to it, like spoiler=title

What would be the point of them then?

For users, like myself, who wouldn't mind seeing more neatly organized posts. Additionally, it let's people discuss movies, books, TV shows, and such without ruining the plot for others. As simple spoiler can be used to hide any part that might ruin it for some skimming over the posts.
Some users don't want things hidden, such as a busy mod, so having the option to keep them always open for the individual helps lower the annoyance of mods having to click every spoiler they see.

Yes!!! I support. I would really like to hide some stuff I say for a bit. It would come very handy! If it's possible, of course. :judge:

This is exactly why I would support something like this, if it is all possible. I don't know exactly how it would work with moderating, but I do like the spoiler tags/buttons. I watch a lot of TV that's recorded and most of the time I don't like to be spoiled, or spoil someone else's enjoyment as well.
As long as it wasn't unnecessarily overused, though. We don't need a thousand threads with spoilers all in them - people trying to be funny and sarcastic with the spoiler button.

I support it for threads about Movies/Television/Books. But I'm not sure how it could be abused, and I don't know how it would affect mods. Maybe if it's a reward after 100 posts or something, if it could work that way.

Guess it would be "abused" if it's used too much, but if that's the case a mod could always remove unnecessary spoilers from a post.

I was thinking more along the lines of people hiding "inappropriate content" in the spoilers, but I definitely think over-usage would be an issue too especially for the first few days after implementation.

The potential(no, scratch that -- inevitable) abuse is one big reasons we might not want this. I, and all those who help us by reporting things, haven't got the time to click "reveal" or "show" every time.
And editing posts with too many spoilers is also more work than it's worth.
I'd only support it if there was an option to keep them "always open".

Would the "Always Open" be like a mod only thing or for everyone?

I support the idea you had.
Like for me, I wouldn't want to have to click on the show image just to see the picture, cause it would be annoying on my iPad because it may not always work. So yeah, your idea I like.
Oh and added to that, I like his idea, cause users like me want pictures to show, whereas other users may not.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a spoiler though if it was always open for everyone.
To be honest I'd see it as more of a pain in the backside to have spoilers. I mean it would only help with games or certain types of posts such as signature shops and maybe news articles. I don't see how it would really help the sites main goal which is helping people.

My point exactly.
In all honesty not every single feature we have implemented on VT is oriented towards helping people. For example, smilies. They let you express emotion to a certain extent and add color to posts. Just like smilies, spoilers aren't necessary, but I think it would be a welcome addition.

Okay, this had been brought up back when I was on staff and while this works on some forums, with the nature of topics brought up on VT, having anything potentially hidden is not a good idea. It makes it a lot harder for mods to catch sensitive or inappropriate things in a timely manner. Issues may not be reported if people don't bother to unhide potentially inappropriate parts of posts and it means mods have to go around making sure every bit of hidden content is not hidden because people are trying to work around the rules.
What I mean is if people post graphic material in the self-harm section, anything in P101 that is against the rules, etc, because they think if it's hidden, it's okay because not everyone will see it when it's actually not okay at all, you're going to see problems and considering the staff are teens volunteering their time, it's not really fair. To be frank, on a site like this where a lot of topics need to be monitored pretty carefully in order to maintain the security of the members seeking help here, all it would probably do is make doing so more of a hassle than it needs to be. It's much easier to briefly skim a thread to make sure it's alright than have to pick through ones where people decide "oh... hm, maybe this is embarrassing or triggering and I should hide it" and it turns into a 50/50 split of whether or not it's harmless or indeed breaks rules and you can't just turn a blind eye to save the time and effort unfortunately.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be neat in the TV sections or whatnot but from a practical point of view as someone who moderated the help sections, there are some obvious problems with this idea here. It's a feature that would probably end up being abused and because of the type of site this is, I don't think it's necessary or a good idea. I get that not everything about VT is centered around helping people but a majority is because it is a help site and you should keep that in mind when suggesting features that may be great in the non-help sections but potentially troublesome in the part of the site meant to help people. This was my contribution when I was on staff and I thought I'd mention it again.

I'd prefer to have a thread prefix, so I know before I open the thread at all. It makes no difference to moderation and I can tell if a thread might have spoilers.

That's a better idea but I honestly see these being horribly abused beyond belief.

If someone was considerate enough they could just write
-SPOILER-
asdfadfs
-SPOILER-
There isn't a need for a mod or thread titles. Spoilers might come up accidental, it's up to the posters discretion whether they want to ruin something for other people or not.

Spoilers can't really work on VT. That would take a lot more time when moderating to go through spoiler posted and buried in P101 and a lot more would slip through the cracks. I also really don't like spoilers... :\

Due to the type of site this is and some of the sections such as puberty 101 and other help sections, it wouldn't work and this site is primarily a Help and Advice site.

That might be seen as a decision, although looking at the poll it should still be very seriously considered
EDIT: Wait, can make them usable in some forums but not in others, so in TWPR but not P101. You can do that on IPB I think but I don't know about VB
