Imagine for a moment that when you die, instead of going to heaven or hell because you've lived a good life or a bad life, you're given a choice. You die, and you stand before the gatekeeper, who is neither good nor evil, and you are told to choose a gate. Both gates look exactly the same: plain and white. The only bit of color is the silver latch. Behind the gate on the left is chaos and evil, but complete freedom. That is hell. Behind the gate on the right is heaven: peace and harmony. You will have no freedom. You will be bound by rules and restrictions, but there will be no evil.
You have no idea who before you has chosen which door. You are given no counseling, and once you make your decision, you may not turn back on it.
Which gate do you choose?

heaven because hell may be free... but its hell

What are the differences? One has a silver latch and one doesn't? I'd go with the one that doesn't. I think the information on freedom and heaven/hell is irrelevant, because you don't have a choice between the two, only the gates separating them.

Did you even read the post? You don't know which is which.
In fact, how are we supposed to know the left goes to hell and right to heaven? The gate keeper won't tell us.

Wait, so the gates are see-through?
And what about knowledge of freedom? Does the gate keeper tell us that we get no freedom in Heaven? And surely the reason it's called heaven is because you're free? I'm so confused.

if you ignore the labels of heaven and hell and just go by what is actually waiting for you behind each gate your choices are chaos, evil and freedom or peace, harmony and rules/restrictions (which I guess is the "no freedom" part. I mean you won't be in prison or anything, right?). We have rules and restrictions already. laws and stuff like that. so that won't be any different. but we also have chaos and evil. so in other words the choice is continuing to have laws and also having peace and harmony, or giving up laws and having chaos and evil. for me it's an easy choice. I'll take the peace and harmony.

I think you have to decide which is heaven, freedom or enjoyment

The idea is that yes, we have rules and laws and such now, but we have a choice as to whether or not we will obey them. Technically there are consequences if we don't, but there's still the choice. In this hypothetical situation, not only do you have rules to follow, you have no free will.

You know which is behind each gate. I specified in the original post. The point is to ignore the labels of heaven and hell and choose between freedom with evil and pain and chaos attached or peace and good with no free will. The only reason I used heaven and hell as labels in the first place is to make it a little more understandable based on typical societal beliefs.

you should specify that more clearly in the original post. since the "hell" gate is no different at all then life as we currently know it, I would choose neither gate and open a couple beers and chill out with the gatekeeper. don't bother telling me that I "have" to choose. my choice is none of the above. so unless the Gate Goons come and drag me thru a gate i'm staying there. and if they drage me thru a gate, they made the choice not me :P

Technically, in hell, there would be no good. What's in one gate can't exist in the other.
It's just a hypothetical situation, meant to allow you to think about what you value more. The reason I didn't specify whether you have to choose or if you have a time limit is because this isn't real. Honestly, there just isn't any point in stating that you don't want to choose. That's the idea. You want the best of both and the worst of neither.

It's a tricky question. But I guess I would go with heaven. If everyone had absolute freedom, it would simply be too... Dangerous. Hence what probably causes the chaos.
I can assume what would more than likely end up happening, is you would actually be more restricted in hell. Not by rules and restrictions but by fear. The fear that if you stepped outside, someone would decide that they liked what you were wearing, or driving, or holding, and try to take it. That's no way to enjoy the afterlife.

i get that. but already i have freedom and there is chaos and evil so there is no point in taking that gate cuz Been there, Done that. The other gate means giving up free will so I don't want that either. so my choice is to keep my free will, but to sacrifice peace and harmony, by refusing either door. so IMO there is a point in hanging out with the gate keeper. technically that IS my choice, not that i am making no choice at all. I am not willing to give up free will for peace and harmony but I am not willing to pay the price of evil and chaos for free will. so i have free will but no peace and harmony but no evil and chaos either. all i have is a beer with a neutral gatekeeper. unless he cards me. then i don't even have the beer. just the neutral gatekeeper.

Thank you for actually thinking about the question!
Yeah, that's the idea. The chaos is created by the freedom.
I suppose that would depend on the person. I would imagine that some people could drop into a situation like that and not be afraid. I would also imagine that that's exactly the type of person that would choose it, and that's why other people would be afraid. You're also making the assumption that the afterlife is formulated in the same way as our world. Maybe in the afterlife, we don't live in houses or drive cars, and our bodies have completely different capabilities. O.o Just something to think about.

That's a whole nother thought train entirely. But since we really have no damn idea what the afterlife is like, it's best to go by what we do know. I just feel that some rules and restrictions have to be in place or else... Well, or else chaos I suppose.
But either way, even if the afterlife is completely different, the concept still applies.

I would hope to choose the door that leads to Hell because I have complete freedom. Of course where you have complete freedom you're going to have people doing bad things, but at least I can do whatever I want. I wouldn't have to worry about getting murdered because I'm already dead.
I mean living in haemony sounds great and all but I dont want to follow a bunch of rules in the aftet-life. I mean, that woukd your punishmemt be if you broke any of those rules?

You can't. It is literally impossible for you to break the rules.

It's probably a source of entertainment for the hell-goers.

I mean...I feel like I can't really point out specific rules without adding a personal flavor. Just think really strict religious and moral values.
Is the restriction of freedom not evil in it's own sense?
No. Everyone there has knowingly chosen it for him or herself. It would be evil had they been forced into it.

You're dead. The rules of everything are going to change a little bit. On Earth, you're used to being able to make decisions and carry them out. In the afterlife, if you choose heaven, you relinquish that free will and your soul is bound by the rules, whether you try to follow them or not.

Freedom, always freedom.
Sure, peace would be lovely for a time. But, the way I see it humans are naturally chaotic, energetic creatures who are inherently destructive. Peace for eternity would be boring after a time.
