View Full Version : Does This Sound Like A Stupid Future To You?

In all honesty, I just want to travel across the U.S. playing music in bars and clubs. I don't need a lot of money to get by. Hell, I wouldn't mind sleeping in a car or hotel every night. I want to see new places. But everyone tells me that this wouldn't make me happy. Shouldn't I be the judge of that? I mean, I intend to go to college and get a degree first, so I'll have a backup if things get unbearable. Opinions?

I would really want to live like that, but it wouldnt really GET me anywhere. I mean, it would be fun and a great experience, but I want to live a different life

You need to be the judge of what will make you happy. I think it sounds cool. :)

I just don't want to upset my parents. My mom would probably make me feel awful, especially with a little sibling on the way. If it weren't for them, I'd be out there as soon as college was done.

Yeah I see where you're coming from Cheese, but I honestly don't see my life going anywhere if I stayed and got a "normal" job haha. I just dunno. :what:

You need to be the judge of what will make you happy. I think it sounds cool. :)

Hahaha thanks bro. :D

IMHO, that sounds awesome, and bar and club gigs(depending where they are) can get you good money. Look at SHM(Swedish House Mafia). When they started, they were three friends who went around sweden and northern europe playing at club gigs and look what happened to them. Sure they had talents but still.
If this were me, i would first get a music theory degree or something like that, so if all else fails, you can become a producer, composer or what not. And good thing your smart enough to have a backup idea(the getting the degree).

Like myself, I really want to be a Software developer or game developer, then after that it is a musician, then i have a couple things in between, and finally as a final back up plan, the military.

But good luck with what ever you do.

There's no such thing as a stupid future. You should do what you want to do. It does not matter what others think of it. If you are sure that you want to do it, then go right ahead.

sounds like a nice free life :)

i'm most likely going to fail Highschool, not go to college, never have a gf, loose my friends and family support, have no job, and be homeless and die in the cold.

Then I'd find you, take you too my home, give you soup, and money, THEN TAKE IT ALL AWAY AND THROW YOU BACK IN THE COLD! Wait what? No, seriously though,
don't be so pessimistic about the future, see how things go, theres something happy for everyone

Yeah, it sounds stupid to me.

But what I think doesn't matter. If you really want to, you should go for it.

Shouldn't I be the judge of that? Opinions? You don't like their opinions so you find different one lmboo but it's a fantasy right now and just for you so whatever you're thinking its yours. if you grow up and pursue that then you'll find out right

If that's what makes you happy, go for it. But, you need money to be able to travel and thus you'll probably need to save up for a while. Also, going in the music career, actually booking nights at clubs and bars, sounds like the plot of a movie and thus rather unrealistic. Not to crush your dreams, but you better have that Plan B at the ready.

It's not something that I would do, but hey, to each their own. If it makes you happy, I say go for it.

It's not my cup of tea so to speak, but it doesn't sound stupid. If it makes you happy, then go for it. It does sound interesting as well.

I find it cool. I'd do what you say of getting a degree or something because you can't travel around the world forever, and you'll need to find a job once you settle in somewhere.

If you really like music and you're gonna practice and be good enough, go for it. Honestly, I'd like to do that too... ^_^

I'm not going to necessarily discourage you from doing this; but at the same time I'm not going to say just go do it and be yourself. All I'm going to say is this: this may not be as glorified of a life as you make it out to be in your mind. And I know that you probably already know that, but I'd just like to reiterate it. To do something like this, you'd first obviously need a band or at least have the instruments you need if you go solo. Then you'd have to know people - people that can hook you up to get a gig somewhere at a bar/club. And unless you become well-known (not yet famous like pop stars), you probably won't get paid too much. But if you say that you don't mind that then more power to you. Just think about all your options and all the possible consequences. Because when it comes down to it, it's really all about you and not anyone else's opinion.

First, don't let anybody tell you what will make you happy. I would love to do that eventually. You can live off of almost nothing. Something to research would be dirtbagging tips. Dirtbags are rock climbers that call no place home and travel around the world doing what they love. One thing that people love about it is that nearly anywhere they go, they'll have friends waiting for them.

That is very interesting and awesome. Being able to go to different places, and experimenting new things

I think you're still too young to decide what you should do with your future. While I think that sounds neat and all, touring the country will end up costing more money than you'd make playing at bars. Not only that, but if you plan on going to college, you're probably going to have massive debt (assuming you don't have gigantic scholarships). Realistically, I think touring the nation playing music won't make enough money to sustain a bus, equipment, and costs of living (food, clothes, etc.) unless you're pretty famous.

The idea sounds wonderful, but my guess is that particular career path is uncommon because it's impractical- you can't sustain a career doing that unless you're famous (you can be one of the best musicians in the world, but unless you have fame, you're not going to be paid a whole lot). If you really want to travel, you could go on a road trip; plenty of people rent RV's and to see the country for a week.

But if you have the means to do it (and by that, I mean lots of money), I'd definitely suggest going for it. Not many people can chase their dreams or have the passion to attempt them. It would be incredible if you could pull it off. But for now, I think you should wait and see how you feel a few years from now. Your plans could change, and you might not want to invest that much money into a potential risk.

Maybe when you are at college - vacation times you can try it out and see how it goes.

Definitely get some sort of qualification in degree form first but after that the worlds your oyster! (I know, cheesy saying!:P) I'd love to travel around the world for a few years after getting a degree, the only trouble is money. I'd need to save a lot to even begin to start travelling and then probably need to find a job somewhere for a short period of time to fund my next move. But honestly yes! I'd love to do something like that and it would be a great experience
