Why are eggrolls called eggrolls when they don't have any egg in them? The proper name for them, translating the Chinese name for them, is spring rolls. But most people call them eggrolls (even I do). So why are they called that?

Probably one of those translation misunderstandings

I imagine it as some fancy 19th centuery folks buying exotic foods from china and getting some translation mistakes but they dont care :)

Over in England, we have always called them spring rolls, never heard of eggrolls.

Can't say they appeal to me. The name and what's in them puts me off.

You don't like the vegetables and meat inside them?
On the subject of eggrolls, I really like my mom's homemade ones, more than store-brought ones. Just ate some for lunch

An egg roll is a staple in Cantonese cuisine. Different than a spring roll, a traditional egg roll is fried or baked egg dough that is usually hollow or unfilled AFAIK. A spring roll is what we all know so well and love (actually, I don't like spring rolls. :P).
Probably someone just mixed up spring rolls and egg rolls.

Do not know why.. The egg rolls here are a thicker crust than spring rolls. spring rolls have a thinner crust .. Both are good yum yum yum

That makes sense. Thank you.

Its the pastry type outside and other vegetables and meat inside that just puts me off.
