Sorry to break it to you. But no, for a good gaming PC, you would need about $1200 and that's only good. For the perfect gaming PC, it would cost an upwards of $2000+.

Plain and simple. No

Nope, need more than that, however it might be enough to build the back bone of one. Motherboard, case, CPU, PSU, hard drive and ram. Upgrade it as you get more money.

The most you could run with that would be Bioshock in low-medium settings.

Sorry but no, it probably wouldn't be enough for a good general laptop...
You'll need a lot more

You can barely get a decent computer for $800 dollars, sorry.

That sir is where your wrong. For an upwards of 500+ you can get a decent Pre-built PC... As for building one you can buy Some good parts for surprisingly good prices, The only problem is that for a gaming PC you may have to go over 500 just a little maybe 550 575 for a good enough PC, For That you could probably run most things on good quality meaning maybe medium setting. But that again all depends on what you use the money on or to specialize in certain areas of the PC.:D

This,

You'd be looking around 600-700 USD for a good gaming PC, you might get a good general laptop with enough to boost the graphics card to something acceptable.

I know in the UK a good gaming laptop was going to cost me £450-£500 so yeah you're probably looking at 600 upwards.

Personally, I would wait.

A: you need more money
B: the good parts now, will be cheaper then

I managed to build a fairly decent gaming rig for £500 (don't know in US $) and I have upgraded it as I go along.

There is a lot to keep in mind when building...the last "performance" model I built was about $700 for parts, but that was with a lot of shopping around and buying things at the right time, on sale, and promo discounts. Without all of that I was probably looking at $900 for parts. That didn't include accessories, being, screens, keyboard/mouse, speakers ect. I think with all of that the total cost ended up being $1,800...but that was with 2 32" HD tv's for screens :D

False, a good gaming PC can easily be built for $700-800 and run any current games at almost max settings.

$500 is low but check out some of my PC builds at www.youtube.com/tgbuzzofficial or www.youtube.com/sethfitzgeraldhd for some ideas on building a $500 gaming rig.

monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc included?
i'd think a good 24inch monitor would cost like around 150-200 alone

There wasn't any talk about peripherals though.

Mouse and Keyboards are easy and cheap to come by anyway. Monitors are VERY expensive though...

$500 for the computer itself you may be able to find a build that will do fairly well with all of today's games, but don't expect to play everything on max graphics. but then again you got to account for stuff like a keyboard and a mouse.

This is just one example of many builds you can make with such a budget. Nothing incredibly fancy, but well above console level.

You don't need some mega-goddess of a computer that will run you 2k just for the tower. $500 will get you pretty damn far, and I'm not sure why people are saying otherwise. (No offense.)

With an AMD APU you can build a pc under that price and run crysis quite well, so yeah, thats plenty

Or check out techsyndicate on youtube. He does videos on the best PCs for certain prices

The first bunch of people that think it's impossible to build one for $500. Hilarious.. Lmao. I'm building one for around $450 atm. Peripherals and monitor not included. If you want someone with experience to go off of, not just a yes or no answer:

His $500 specifically ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6olutcuXHc

I'm planning on building a budget pc. For someone who has never had a real gaming computer, I have a feeling a $500 self-built computer is going to be a huge upgrade. The point is, if you know what you're doing or you have someone who does help you, your $500 will go a lot further in a custom machine than a pre-built one. I for instance will be upgrading from a $350 acer laptop with a 1.6 ghz singlecore processor (that's all you need to hear) to a custom $500 computer. Huge difference. I have a feeling the OP is in a similar, yet not as drastic, situation.

Google logicalincrements and find one that fits your price range.
