I just found an old hard drive in my cupboard... it just shows how quickly things have advanced...
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/muckingfuppet/28f1e843.jpgLook at the capacity! :D
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/muckingfuppet/12794919.jpgThe date of manufacture.
Like we can get 1TB hard drives now, and the latest technology can give us literally millions of GBs! It's all happened so fast lol!

I have a Seagate 20MB HDD Laying around in an old Commodore Machine I have (Not a Commodore 64). It's huge, dimension-wise. I'll post a picture of it later. Sad part is, it doesn't work. It turns on, but the drive just bangs the arm back and forth.
I've also got a PLUS! Brand 40MB HDD as well, in a Tandy SL1000 Machine.
I USED to have a 10MB Slot HDD (Was a Card that went into a Slot on the Motherboard, which I believe was about 20 inches long). I don't have it anymore, though.
I've got a Maxtor 240MB Hdd laying around that still has its original price tag on it. Was marked with a 300$ Price tag back in it's day...

wow....I remember when a one gig hard drive was like hard core stuff...and now a tb is not even hardcore since its easy and cheap to get a terabyte now...whats after tb btw?

December 28th, 2007, 09:01 AM
After a TB is a PB i think (Pettabyte) then it goes up to ZB (zettebyte) i think.
I've also got hundreds of sticks of old ram, mostly about 2mb lol.
I did manage to get that HDD plugged it, it works fine, it's still got windows on it, and as far as I can tell it's windows 3.1 lol.

Ooh, the biggest meaturement is a YB (yottabyte), that comes after ZB.
As of 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), no computer has achieved one yottabyte of storage. In fact, the combined space of all the computers in the world does not amount to one yottabyte.

15 years ago, people would think 1GB was crazy, and it was.. an operating system could one day end up as 1TB.

LOL thats freeky its weird though everything else in the world like phones and stuff seems to be getting smaller, but software seems to be getting bigger its obvious why but I thought they would try reducing the size of it.
Aηdy
December 28th, 2007, 04:16 PM
Why would they wanna reduce the size though? Taht would mean for more compression making things run hella slow!

December 28th, 2007, 04:17 PM
yeh but they could try making a system that is a small file but runs fast :P

I can't tell you when exactly "Then" was.
Then, You've got this:

That's a 5MB "Hard Drive" from 1956. It weighed over a ton.

I added a 5MB HDD from 1956 to my post, I think right after you replied. :)
I wouldn't want to think about how big my 500GB Drive I have in my Desktop computer would theoretically have to be if It existed by some fathom of the imagination in 1956.
...However big dimension-wise that 5MB HDD is, multiply those by 102,400 (Because if you divide 500GB by 5MB, that's what you get). Also, Multiply the 1 Ton by 102,400, or 102,400 Tons...
Theoretically, of course.
