RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in the city of Rawalpindi on Thursday, her party said.

"She has been martyred," said party official Rehman Malik.

Bhutto, 54, died in hospital in Rawalpindi. Ary-One Television said she had been shot in the head.

Police said a suicide bomber fired shots at Bhutto as she was leaving the rally venue in a park before blowing himself up.

"The man first fired at Bhutto's vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up," said police officer Mohammad Shahid.

Police said 16 people had been killed in the blast.

Earlier, party officials said Bhutto was safe.

A Reuters witness said he saw bodies on a road as well as a mutilated human head.

A suicide bomber killed nearly 150 people in an attack on Bhutto on October 18 as she paraded through the southern city of Karachi after returning home from eight years in self-imposed exile.

You beat me to it lol.

Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a presumed suicide attack.

News of her death was confirmed by a military spokesman and members of her Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
Ms Bhutto had just addressed an election rally in Rawalpindi when gunfire and an explosion occurred.
At least 15 other people are reported killed in the attack and several more were injured. Ms Bhutto had twice been the country's prime minister.
She had been campaigning ahead of elections due in January.
Nawaz Sharif, also a former prime minister and a political rival, told the BBC her death was a tragedy for "the entire nation".
"I can't tell you what the feelings of the people of Pakistan are today," he told BBC News 24 after returning from the hospital where she was brought.
The BBC's Barbara Plett says the killing is likely to provoke an agonised response from her followers, especially from her loyal following in Sindh Province.

Ms Bhutto was key to her party, she was the focus of her party and she was a major political player amongst all those fighting for seats in the forthcoming elections, our correspondent adds.
The PPP has the largest support of any party in the country. Analysts note that Rawalpindi, a garrison city, is seen as one of the country's most secure cities, making the attack even more embarrassing for the military authorities.

Pakistan is now in the hands of Mr. Musharraf. If he goes back to his old tricks of Emergency Rule, then there is going to be major setbacks in the country. Although there is even talks of a civil war, which really wouldnt be suprising.

Honesty the idea of peace in the middle east is a joke
the only way there will ever bee middle eastern peace
is if we kill all of them
Or a SUBSTANTIAL amount (I'm talking WMD's) to the point where they are forced to scatter to regroup so they can attack in another 10-20yrs

It's like the Congo, Sudan, Columbia, etc...
There will always be war
but the middle east has a bigger sway over the west
and yes the majority of that sway stems from the need to protect areas like Saudi Arabia

Its a simple fact of life
if theres something that you need to protect in order to maintain stability in your own country
then you'll fuckin protect it

thats why we have always jumped into the middle east and why for the most part we will always turn a blind eye to Africa like we are now, like we did in Rwanda

For now
we are dependant on the oil
its used for everything from running the tens of millions of vehicles to plastics

For this reason we will always remain
that combined with Muslim religion (that whole infidel must leave Muslim lands then must leave planet period thing)
and well...neither side is gonna budge

The middle east
will NEVER
have peace
not true peace anyway

It is sad that she was assasinated as I am sure she was going to become Prime Minister of Pakistan for a 3rd time.

I believe that the gov't is somewhat related to their murder and no Al-Qaeda. I think it is much easier for them to blame Al-Qaeda because lets face it, theyre a powerful terror organization. However, they usually take claim in things that they do and they came out and said they had nothing to do with her death. I think it is just very convenient for the Pakistan govt to say this because they know how the world views Al-Qaeda.

The People of Pakistan arent buying it and believe that Mushareff and the govt had something to do with this and i believe they do.
