I have an APC battery backup power supply that powers my desktop. it's beeping and I'm sure the battery isn't dead. It's only been 2 months since it was changed and I gave it at least 3 hours to charge earlier. I mean, it is old, but this never happened before. What's the problem? Do I need to flat-out get a new unit or what?

Did you somehow put it into bypass mode on accident? If your UPS(or APC as you call it) is controlled by your computer via RS-232 or USB, an interference on either side may have set something off.

Otherwise there's a possibility it's getting too hot. Under desks it gets very warm and dusty(or at least, it does for me), so maybe you should take a can of compressed air to it and clean out the inside.

I don't have a clue. It is connected via USB to my PC so that my computer can notify when the backup battery is in need of a charge downtime or to hibernate the computer when needed.

Well, I mean, it is at least 5 years old.

That might be possible.

I'm not sure how long the battery is rated for, but there's a possibility that it could just be worn out... They change the recipe for those batteries often so it's possible you bought one out of a bad batch. Run the battery all the way down and leave it for about a week, then charge it again. If it still beeps CALL THE GEEK SQAUD!! Lol Good luck :D

Do you guys think I'm best just getting a new unit? I'm thinking that might be my best option.

Then it's probably some other program decided to share the same USB port as your UPS/APC. During that time, this other program is sending something to your UPS that is causing it to shut off when it does that.
Did you install any new programs or updates shortly before it started happening?

Well it had happened in the past but my dad thought it was just the battery. So we replaced it. That was a few months ago. The only updates I've installed are system updates, the ones that require restarts.
